Pugh gives Bucs golden goal against Mountaineers in regular season finale
Wednesday, November 03, 2010
BOONE, N.C. (Nov. 2, 2010) - Junior Colin Pugh's (Dublin, Ireland) golden goal 35 seconds into overtime lifted the ETSU men's soccer team to a 1-0 win over Appalachian State Tuesday night at the ASU Soccer Stadium in Boone, N.C.
"I felt we controlled the game in the first 45 minutes as it was the best I have seen us play all year," said head coach Scott Calabrese. "The second half was a different story. App State worked their way back into the match and really caused us problems. The players have found ways to get results all year long and again deserve tremendous credit for their hard work and desire to win."
ASU (7-7-3, 4-2-1 SoCon) outshot the Bucs (13-5-0, 7-2-0 A-Sun) 14-12 in the contest as ETSU had a 3-2 advantage in shots on goal, while the Mountaineers led in corners 9-2.
Keeper Ronnie Hreha (Asheville, Tenn.) posted his fifth shutout of the season as he improved to 10-3-0 on the year.
In the first half, sophomore David Haba (Germantown, Tenn.) just missed putting the Bucs ahead in the 5th minute as his shot clanked off of the near post.
Neither team was able to get on the board in the half as the match remained scoreless at the break.
ETSU flirted with disaster late in the second half as Ethan Durland got to a loose ball in the Buccaneer box in the 84th minute, but his shot just went wide off the far post and was cleared away to end the threat.
The game would go into overtime as neither team was able to net a game-winner in regulation.
Less than a minute into the first overtime period, junior Aaron Schoenfeld (Knoxville, Tenn.) played a great ball through to Pugh as he flicked a shot over the ASU keeper into the net for the game-winner. The goal was the fourth of the season and the third game-winner for Pugh.
The Bucs return to action on Nov. 11 at 7 p.m. as they are set to host the winner of the Campbell/Lipscomb quarterfinal match in the A-Sun semifinals at Summers-Taylor Stadium.
