GREENVILLE, S.C. (Sept. 1, 2010) - The ETSU men's soccer team dropped a hard fought match Wednesday night to Furman 1-0 in the season opener at Stone Soccer Stadium in Greenville, S.C.

"I am very impressed with the way the players competed tonight ," said head coach Scott Calabrese. "I know it's not the result we were looking for, but I am very excited about the future of this team. We have a very talented young team, and I look for great things to come from this group."

The Bucs (0-1-0) outshot the Paladins (1-0-0) 9-7 in the contest and had a 6-4 advantage in corners.

Sophomore Aaron Schoenfeld (Knoxville, Tenn.) had the Bucs first good look of the match in the 20th minute as he fired a shot on goal that was saved by Furman's Alec Kann.

ETSU outshot the Paladins 5-2 in the half, but the game remained scoreless at the end of the first half.

Play was back-and-forth early in the second half as both teams looked to open things up as there was a couple early shot, but play settled in until freshman David Geno (Kingsport, Tenn.) flicked on a header that was saved by Kann.

In the 85th minute, Dane Roberts sent a ball in from 35 yards that forced ETSU keeper James Holt (Murfreesboro, Tenn.) to make an incredible save touching the ball into the crossbar sending it high into the air, but Furman's Fabien Vorbe was there to head the rebound from the save into the back of the net to give the Paladins a 1-0 lead.

Late in the match the Bucs poured on the pressure creating several chances in the final five minutes of the half, but the Buccaneers could not find the back of the net for the equalizer as the final was 1-0 Furman.

The men's soccer team is back in action on Monday at 7 p.m. as the Bucs head to Clemson. For more information on ETSU men's soccer and all other Buccaneer athletic news please visit www.ETSUBucs.com.
