Calabrese announces 2010 schedule
Wednesday, May 05, 2010
JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (May 4, 2010) - After reaching the conference semifinals a year ago, the ETSU men's soccer team will have its hands full with a loaded schedule including hosting national semifinalist North Carolina in 2010 as head coach Scott Calabrese announced the fall schedule Tuesday.
"We have put together a very challenging schedule for the 2010 season," Calabrese said. "The non-conference portion of our schedule features some of the top teams in their respective regions. They are programs with years of tradition, success, NCAA tournament appearances and national championships in the case of Clemson and UNC."
ETSU will play eight games at Summers-Taylor Stadium, and ten on the road including trips to ACC and SoCon schools. After exhibition games against Wofford (Aug. 21) and Tusculum (Aug. 27), the Bucs open the 2010 season with a four-game road swing including contests against Furman (Sept. 1), Clemson (Sept. 6), Bradley (Sept. 10) and Evansville (Sept.12).
The Bucs open their home slate on Sept. 15 when the Winthrop Eagles come to town for a 7 p.m. game, the first home night contest since the start of the program in 2008. The men's soccer team continues a five-game home stand with Marshall (Sept. 20) and UNC Asheville (Sept.25) before getting into conference play.
Campbell comes to town on Sept. 30 for the Atlantic Sun home opener at 7 p.m. at Summers-Taylor Stadium, while the Bucs close out the home stand against Mercer (Oct. 2).
A week later, ETSU heads to Stetson (Oct. 8) and Florida Gulf Coast (Oct. 10) for its first road conference weekend. The Bucs then come home to host Jacksonville (Oct. 15) and North Florida (Oct. 17) before closing out the conference season on the road with Belmont (Oct. 22), Lipscomb (Oct. 24) and USC Upstate (Oct. 27).
The Tar Heels, who have been in the College Cup the last two seasons, make their way to Johnson City, Tenn. on Oct. 30 at 7 p.m. for a big showdown with the Bucs. ETSU will look to repay UNC for a 2-1 overtime loss from a year ago. The Buccaneers close out the regular season on Nov. 2 as they head to Boone, N.C. to face Appalachian State.
"By bringing UNC to Johnson City it gives our fans a chance to see a top 5 NCAA men's soccer team packed with talent and future professional players up against a quickly improving Buccaneer men's soccer program," Calabrese added. "It is a great opportunity for our program. This schedule will measure our team and their progress over the three years since the program's inception and will definitely prepare us for the all important conference schedule starting at the end of September.
