Wednesday, February 10, 2010
JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Feb. 10, 2008) - ETSU men's soccer head coach Scott Calabrese announced the signing of eight players to the 2010 signing class Wednesday.
The Bucs are coming off their second season that saw them make the Atlantic Sun conference semifinals. ETSU also had six players named all-conference including Scott Rosman (Kenner, La.) Guilherme Reis (Belo Horizonte, Brazil), Aaron Schoenfeld (Knoxville, Tenn.), Sean Hoek (Newburgh, Ind.) Theo Yang (Lilburn, Ga.) and Alesi Osorio (Austin, Texas).
"In the two years since the program's inception, I feel we have made great strides in establishing a team capable of challenging for an A-Sun championship," Calabrese said. "This past season our team improved greatly reaching the A-Sun tournament and advancing to the Semi-Final match. We return a strong nucleus of players with considerable experience and ambition. They will be joined in the fall of 2010 by an exceptional group of recruits. This group will help raise the overall standard of our team considerably creating tremendous competition for starting spots and roles within the team. This will prove important bearing in mind the strength of our non-conference schedule in 2010 which includes perennial powerhouses UNC-Chapel Hill, Clemson, Furman, Bradley and Evansville."
The 2010 signing class includes David Geno (Kingsport, Tenn.), Mario Samperio (Guatemala City, Guatemala), Blaike Woodruff (Georgetown, Texas), Itode Fubara (Ogbema, Nigeria), Nick Dykes (Nashville, Tenn.), Colin Pugh (Dublin, Ireland), Steven Matlock (Knoxville, Tenn.) and Jason Finn (Galway, Ireland).
David Geno (Kingsport, Tenn.) (Forward) (Dobyns-Bennett HS/ FC Alliance 92)
Geno was named the Conference Offensive Player of the year in 2008 and 2009. A Tennessee All-State selection in 2008 and 2009, prior to his senior season at Dobyns-Bennett Geno had already set the school all-time scoring record with 74 Goals and 50 assists in three years. Geno was a member of the Tennessee State 92 ODP Team and the Region III Regional Team in 2009.
Calabrese on Geno
"David is a natural goal scorer with size, speed and strength. He has great composure in front of goal which has translated into goals at every level he has played. He can play with his back to goal but his real strength is running at players with pace and his knack for being in the right place at the right time to convert chances."
Mario Samperio (Guatemala City, Guatemala) (Midfielder) (Colegio Valle Verde)
Samperio is the captain of Guatemala's Under 20 National Team, and was also played for the Under 17 National Team. He currently plays for Communicaciones and was an integral part of them winning Guatemala's national championship in 2009.
Calabrese on Samperio
"Mario is a hardworking, tenacious defensive central midfielder. He is a strong tackler and does a great job of sitting in front of the back four and breaking up the play. He also has a wide range of passing and is very composed on the ball. The transition to college soccer should be helped by his experiences with the Guatemalan national team."
Blaike Woodruff (Georgetown, Texas) (Midfielder) (Georgetown HS)
Woodruff was a member of South Texas ODP Team and the Lonestar 92 Red Team the was the 2007 State and Regional champions. The Texas native was the District 5A MVP and First Team selection in 2009. Woodruff was also named to the All-Texas Central First Team in 2009. In 2008, Woodruff was named the District 5A Co-MVP and was a First Team All-District selection.
Calabrese on Woodruff
"Blaike is an extremely competitive player who will bring much needed tenacity and edge. He hates to lose and has the mentality and ability to be very successful at this level. He predominantly plays as a central midfielder but due to his technical ability, strong tackling and athleticism he also has the ability to play wide as a right back or right midfielder."
Itode Fubara (Ogbema, Nigeria) (Forward) (Unity Comprehensive College)
Fubara was named the MVP of the Abua - Odual Chairman's Cup in Rivers State Nigeria in 2008. A Nigerian native, Fubara was the highest goal scorer with seven in the Abua - Odual Seven Aside Tournament in 2007. He was also named the MVP of the Abua - Odual Seven Aside Tournament in 2006.
Calabrese on Fubara
"Fubara is a talented player who can fill a number of positions. However, he is probably most suited playing in behind a central striker. He has an extremely quick change of pace and the ability to beat players at will. He also has very good vision and can play the penetrating pass to release forwards and create opportunities for us."
Nick Dykes (Nashville, Tenn.) (Defender) (Independence HS/FC Alliance 92)
Dykes was a Tennessee 92 ODP State Team Member and a member of the Region III Regional Team in 2009. The Nashville native participated in the College Cup Interregional Friendlies with the Region III Regional Team. Dykes was a member of the 2009-10 FC Alliance 92 Black D1 Tennessee State Champions. He was also named Tennessee All-State in 2009.
Calabrese on Dykes
"Nick is a strong center half who is commanding in both the air and the tackle. He has a no nonsense approach to the game and leaves little to chance with his decision-making. He displays great leadership on and off the field and will be a great asset to our program moving forward."
Colin Pugh (Dublin, Ireland) (Midfielder/Forward) (Jefferson College)
Pugh, a transfer from Jefferson College, was named the MCCAC All-Conference First Team in 2009 with ten goals and eight assists. The team captain of the Vikings, Pugh was named first team all-region and led Jefferson to a top ten national ranking in 2009.
Calabrese on Pugh
"Colin is an intelligent midfielder who predominantly plays wide left or wide right but also can carry the ball inside with great effect. He has a sound understanding of the game, can beat players individually and provides quality service from either side to the forwards as well as score goals himself."
Steven Matlock (Knoxville, Tenn.) (Goalkeeper) (Farragut HS/FC Alliance 92)
Matlock was the starting goalkeeper for the Tennessee 92 ODP State Team from 2007-09. He was also an integral part of the FC Alliance 92 winning the Atlanta Cup in 2009 and three straight state championships from 2007-2009.. In 2009, Matlock was a part of the Farragut State Championship team.
Calabrese on Matlock
"Steven is a very strong goalkeeper. He is clean technically, has a great appetite for training and tremendous athletic potential. He also possesses a level of composure beyond what I would expect from a young goalkeeper. His ODP experience as well as his club experience will help him to make a quick transition to the college game"
Jason Finn (Galway, Ireland) (Defender) (Belvedere FC)
Finn help Belvedere FC win the U17 Dublin District Schoolboy League in 2008 and 2009. The Ireland native also helped Belvedere win the FAI U17 Challenge Cup in 2009, and the U16 Dublin District Schoolboy League in 2008. Finn won the FAI Interprovincial Runners Up Medal with Connacht Soccer Schools in 2008 and was a member of Republic of Ireland (FAI) Developmental squad in 2007.
