ETSU men's soccer defeats Wofford for first win in program history, 2-0
Sunday, August 31, 2008
"We had a total team effort in the win today," said head coach Scott Calabrese. "Every single player made a contribution in the game, and we needed it with the hot conditions. For the team, getting the first win is key, and this will give us a great deal of confidence."
Freshman Sean Hoek (Newburgh, Ind.) got the Bucs on the board in the 6th minute as he settled an Andrew Brown (Montego Bay, Jamaica) cross and blasted a shot from 25 yards into the back of the net giving the Bucs a 1-0 advantage.
ETSU had a couple good scoring opportunities in the half, but would settle for a 1-0 halftime lead as the defense held the Terriers at bay in the first half.
In the second half, the Bucs continued to play good defense as Wofford was limited to six shots in the half. In the 83rd minute, freshman Aliyu Sugri (LaVergne, Tenn.) put the game away for ETSU as he scored on a breakaway beating the Terrier keeper to give the Bucs a 2-0 lead.
"Our guys showed a great deal of character," said Calabrese. "Wofford put a lot of pressure on us with their direct play and set pieces, but the team did a good job of playing good defense, getting the ball down and keeping possession."
ETSU was outshot by Wofford 14-8, but kept the Terrier defense on their heels. James Holt (Murfreesboro, Tenn.) led the Bucs defensively collecting five saves and earning his first shutout win.
"I am very proud of our effort today," Calabrese said. "I think one of the keys to being successful is getting rid of mistakes in the back. Our team did a great job of that today, and really showed heart and confidence."
The Bucs (1-1) are back in action on Sept. 6 at 11 a.m. on the road against VMI. Please visit www.ETSUBucs.com for more information on men's soccer or any of the other Buccaneer athletic teams.
