ETSU soccer programs make history with new multi-million dollar stadium and start of men's varsity team
Wednesday, September 03, 2008
JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Sept. 2, 2008) - ETSU soccer had a very successful and historic weekend, as a new men's soccer varsity program took the field, both the men and women opened the new multi-million dollar Summers-Taylor Stadium, and the women's team opened their season 2-0 for the first time in five years.
ETSU brought in men's coach Scott Calabrese in 2007 to take the helm of the men's program, beginning with the club team in 2007, and continuing with scholarship play in 2008. Calabrese has brought in a young group loaded with talent in his first recruiting class, which includes a couple holdovers from the club team. Under Calabrese, the Bucs opened the inaugural season at home in the newly completed $2.4 million Summers-Taylor Stadium, falling 3-1 to Appalachian State but doing so in front of a sellout crowd of 1,311. The team made history again later in the weekend, going on the road to defeat established Southern Conference opponent Wofford, 2-0, and pick up the team's first ever win.
Meanwhile, the women's soccer team won its opener on the road against UNC Asheville, and then came home to Summers-Taylor to defeat Morehead State 2-1 in overtime in front of a crowd of 518 two days after the men had opened the stadium. Again, it marks the first time ETSU's women have been 2-0 since the 2003 season.
