JOHNSON CITY (Oct. 2, 2012) – The ETSU Department of Intercollegiate Athletics announced Tuesday, TruPoint Bank will sponsor the annual Buccaneer breast cancer awareness games this season, which begins Friday night with volleyball and men’s soccer.
Fans are encouraged to wear pink to both the ETSU volleyball and men’s soccer games Friday night at 7 p.m. The volleyball team hosts Atlantic Sun Conference newcomer Northern Kentucky in Brooks Gym and men’s soccer takes on North Florida at Summers-Taylor Stadium.
Members of the ETSU marketing and ticket staff will be taking donations at both games that night, as well as selling specially designed ETSU breast cancer awareness T-shirts for $10. Those who either purchase a T-shirt or make a donation will be eligible to win an autographed Coaches vs. Cancer ETSU men’s soccer jersey, while one lucky fan at volleyball will win a signed pink volleyball by the entire team.
Meanwhile, next Friday, Oct. 12, when the ETSU women’s soccer team hosts Northern Kentucky at 7 p.m., fans who make donations or purchase a T-shirt will be eligible to win an autographed pink soccer jersey and a signed practice ball.
On gameday, both venues will be decorated in pink, while the volleyball team will be sporting pink warm-up shirts and the men’s soccer team will be wearing pink sweat bands. Next Friday, the women’s soccer team will wear specially designed pink Nike game jerseys.
BucWild members will also receive bonus points if they attend the games and wear pink. For regular games, BucWild members receive three points for attedning a men's or women's soccer game, while picking up four points for going to a volleyball game. Leading up to the games, student-athletes from all three teams have been selling pink paper volleyballs and soccer balls for a $1 to recognize those who have been affected by the disease. In addition, this Thursday morning starting at 8:45 a.m., members from the men’s soccer and volleyball teams, as well as the marketing staff will be passing out free pink donuts courtesy of Dunkin’ Donuts, located by the safety crosswalk connecting from the parking lot to the intramural fields on Jack Vest Drive.
All the donations taken during these three breast cancer games, along with the remaining ETSU pink games this season will be given to the Kay Yow Cancer Fund. In addition to the breast cancer games Friday night, a designated tailgating section has been created in the parking lot at men’s soccer for fans to gather prior to the game and enjoy pregame festivities. Fans can start tailgating at any ETSU athletic event, but have to follow the “ETSU Tailgating Guidelines” which can be found here. The fun also continues on Saturday, as the ETSU volleyball team will have a free cookout prior to its match versus in-state conference rival Lipscomb. The cookout begins at 1:45 p.m. outside Brooks Gym and fans will be able to meet the team during the festivities.
