Pugh Advances to Match Play at U.S. Amateur

Wednesday, August 14, 2013

BROOKLINE, Mass. (Aug. 14, 2013) – Seventeen golfers battled for the remaining 15 slots of match play in the 2013 U.S. Amateur Championship on Wednesday morning, and ETSU rising junior Rhys Pugh (Pontypridd, Wales) advanced to the round of 64.

The stroke-play cut came at 4-over 144, with 66 players inside that cut line. With only 64 golfers eligible to advance to match play, Pugh was in the group of 17 golfers to hit the tee box on par-4, 507-yard No. 14 this morning at 7 a.m. from The Country Club.

Pugh wasted little time advancing to match play as he was in the first playoff group and posted a bogey, which was good enough to make the cut.

Pugh now tees off later this morning at 11:10 a.m. against England’s Max Orrin in the round of the 64. Orrin is currently ranked seventh in the World Amateur Golf Rankings, and finished in a tie for ninth at 1-under-par 139 in stroke play.

In stroke play, Pugh posted a two-round score of 4-over-par 144 and tied for 50th in the 312-player field.

On Monday, Pugh fired an even-par 70 at The Country Club, which was the tougher of two courses as only three golfers finished with a sub-par round on the day. However, after entering the final round of stroke play in a tie for 19th, the Buccaneer golfer carded a 4-over 74 on Tuesday at the Charles River Country Club. Pugh finished the second round strong and made the cut after playing the final four holes at 1-under-par, as the Welsh product recorded a birdie on the par-5, 562-yard No. 16.

In the two rounds of stroke play, Pugh registered six birdies and played the four par 5’s at 2-under-par.

England’s Neil Raymond and Australia’s Brady Watt (No. 9 in World Amateur Rankings) shared medalist honors as both golfers finished at 6-under 134. Overall, only 16 golfers totaled sub-par scores in the stroke play competition.
