Gradecki, Meronk place one-two at Polish Amateur Championship

GDANSK, Poland (July 15, 2013) – The ETSU men’s golf team highlighted the leaderboard this past weekend at the Citi Handlowy XIX Polish Amateur Men’s Open Championship, which was held at the Postołowo Golf Club.

ETSU incoming freshman Mateusz Gradecki (Oborniki Śląskie, Poland) edged out rising sophomore and defending champion Adrian Meronk (Wroclaw, Poland) to win the Championship by one stroke on Sunday afternoon, 212 to 213.

Meronk looked like he was going to run away with the title after firing an impressive opening round score of 6-under 66 on Friday, but Gradecki – who signed his national letter of intent to play for the Bucs back in May – one-upped his counterpart on Saturday. After cold and rainy conditions saw Gradecki post a 2-over-par 74 in round one, the Polish standout responded with an astonishing 7-under 65 on Saturday to climb his way into contention as Meronk carded a 5-over 77. Gradecki’s 65 tied the course record, which was recently set in 2002.

Following the second round, Gradecki sat atop the leaderboard and held a four-shot lead over Meronk, 139 to 143.

Despite Meronk charging back in the final round, it was his double bogey on No. 17 which cost him a shot at winning yet another Polish Amateur Championship. Meronk still finished with the second-lowest score in the final round at 2-under 70, but Gradecki did just enough to dethrone the champion by totaling a 1-over 73 and ended the 54-hole tournament at 4-under-par. Gradecki parred four of the first nine holes on Sunday, and after bogeying two of the first three on the back nine, the future Buccaneer golfer posted par on the final six holes to hold off Meronk.

Gradecki's 65 and Meronk's 66 were the two lowest scores for the championship.

For the tournament, Gradecki tallied 32 pars, 12 birdies and eagled the par-4, No. 17 on Saturday.

Both Gradecki and Meronk will be in action next week at the Lotos Polish Open, which gets underway July 22, while teammate and rising junior Rhys Pugh (Pontypridd, Wales) gears up for this week’s Open Championship.
