Men’s Golf gears up for U.S. Collegiate Championship
Thursday, October 18, 2012
ALPHARETTA, Ga. (Oct. 18, 2012) – The ETSU men’s golf team will go head-to-head with some of the top teams in the country this weekend as the Bucs gear up for the U.S. Collegiate Championship, which is held at the Golf Club of Georgia’s Lakeside Course. The three-day, 54-hole tournament begins Friday morning and ends Sunday afternoon.
LAST TIME OUT FOR THE BUCS
The Bucs are coming off a ninth-place showing at last weekend’s Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate at Blackthorn Club where the Blue and Gold finished with a three-round score of 8-over-par 872 on the 7,147-yard, par-72 course. Individually, sophomore Scott Gibson (Southerness, Scotland) paced ETSU with a 2-over 218 and was one of six players to tie for 23rd. Meanwhile, freshman Chris Hickman (Centreville, Md.) bounced back nicely after shooting a 79 in round two by firing a 2-under 70 in Sunday’s final round. Overall, Hickman tied for 37th with fellow freshman teammate Gudmundur Kristjansson (Reykjavik, Iceland) at 4-over 220.
ABOUT THE THIS WEEKEND’S TOURNAMENT
This weekend’s tournament is hosted by Georgia Tech, while the U.S. Collegiate Championship has also been recognized as “The Masters of College Golf.” The U.S. Collegiate Championship began in 2006 and offers PGA Tour-type, championship conditions for the nation's finest college players, including a personal caddie for all three rounds. The USCC crowns a team and individual champion and honors both on the perpetual mahogany, gold and crystal USCC Trophy, which sits in The Golf Club of Georgia lobby.
Along with the Bucs, the tournament field includes Auburn, Clemson, Duke, Georgia Tech, Iowa, Kent State, Oklahoma State, Southern California, Stanford, Texas A&M, UCLA, Virginia, Wake Forest, and Washington. Eleven teams in the field are ranked within the top-30 of the Golfweek/Sagarin ratings, as well as the top 30 of the Golfstat.com rankings. Meanwhile, three teams are in the top-10 of the Golfweek/Sagarin ratings as Washington and USC rank third and fourth respectively, while UCLA is ninth. Individually, 29 players in the field are ranked within the top-100 of the Golfweek rankings, including five inside the top-10. In addition, 15 players in the field are ranked within the top-100 of the Golfstat.com rankings.
The Golf Club of Georgia’s Lakeside Course plays 7,017 yards and is a par-72. The course was named “Best New Private Course in America” by Golf Digest, and is famous for its accuracy demands on approach shots and its firm, fast greens.
The Bucs will feature a lineup of two sophomores and three freshmen this weekend in Georgia. Along with Gibson, Hickman, and Kristjansson, will be sophomore Rhys Pugh (Pontypridd, Wales) and freshman Adrian Meronk (Wroclaw, Poland). Pugh and Meronk both played for their respective countries at the 2012 World Amateur Team Championship earlier this month in Turkey, while Meronk tied for 29th last weekend at the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate. The Buccaneer freshman shot a 3-over 219.
