Men’s golf returns to action this weekend at Mason Rudolph Invitational

FRANKLIN, Tenn. (Sept. 20, 2012) – Coming off a fifth-place showing and two individual top-10 finishes at the Tar Heel Intercollegiate last weekend in Chapel Hill, the ETSU men’s golf team looks to improve on its season-opening performance when the Bucs travel to the Nashville area for the Mason Rudolph Invitational, beginning Friday morning at the Vanderbilt Legends Club.

The event will take place at the par-71, 7,100-yard course, while the tournament will be a three-day format with 18 holes being played each day. Play begins Friday morning at 9 a.m. (Eastern), while the Bucs tee off 9:30 a.m., as ETSU will be paired up with Mississippi State and South Alabama. The Bucs are one of 15 teams in this weekend’s field which includes host Vanderbilt, No. 22 Virginia, No. 25 Oklahoma, Mississippi State, Ole Miss, Virginia, College of Charleston, Davidson, Rice, Arkansas State, Tennessee Tech, and South Alabama.

Last weekend, freshman Gudmundur Kristjansson (Reykjavik, Iceland) and sophomore Rhys Pugh (Pontypridd, Wales) both opened the fall season on a positive note at the Tar Heel Intercollegiate. Kristjansson – who led the 81-player field by finishing at 8-under on the par-5 holes – finished in a tie for sixth after shooting a 2-under-par 214 (68-73-73). Meanwhile, Pugh had a share of the lead after the first round and tied for ninth after firing a 1-under 215 (66-74-75).

As a team, the Blue and Gold recorded a score of 13-over 877 (288-295-294) and placed fifth out of the 14 team field. Duke won the overall tournament with an 8-under-par 856 (285-282-289), while North Carolina State’s Albin Choi captured the individual title after shooting an 11-under 205.
