Saturday, February 18, 2012

RIO GRANDE, Puerto Rico (Feb. 18, 2012) – After earning a sixth place finish at the spring opening Sea Best Invitational, the ETSU men’s golf team will tee it up in the Puerto Rico Classic in Rio Grande, Puerto Rico, beginning on Sunday.

The setting for the event will be the par-72, 6,902-yard Rio Mar Country Club, where competitors will compete in 18 holes per day from Sunday through Tuesday.

The Puerto Rico Classic has quickly become one of the nation’s top tournaments each season. Since its inception, six tournament champions have gone on to earn their PGA Tour card: Luke Donald (2000), Lucas Glover (2001), Troy Matteson (2002), Chris Kirk (2006) and Roberto Castro (2007).

This year’s event will feature a 15-team field, headlined by top-ranked Texas. The Puerto Rico Classic will play host to eight teams currently in the top 50 of the Golfweek/Sagarin Ratings. In addition to the Longhorns, No. 7 Georgia Tech, No. 8 Alabama, No. 16 Clemson, No. 24 Oklahoma State, No. 26 Georgia and No. 35 Oklahoma will join 40th-ranked and host Purdue at Rio Mar.

ETSU will also be joined by Michigan, North Carolina, North Carolina State, Ohio State, UNC Greensboro and Virginia Tech.

The Bucs are coming off a sixth place showing at the spring opening Sea Best Invitational at TPC Sawgrass. Redshirt senior Rhys Enoch (Cornwall, England) had his best showing so far this year as he tied for second – earning him Atlantic Sun Player of the Week honors.

Joining Enoch in the lineup will be freshmen Scott Gibson (Dumfries, Scotland), Rhys Pugh (Pontypridd, Wales) and Tom Heggarty (Cheshire, England). In addition, senior Peter Wilson (New Locust, N.Y.) will be making his first appearance in an event since last fall as he has been sidelined with a thumb injury.

Live scoring for the Puerto Rico Classic will be available at The 8:00 a.m. shotgun start tomorrow will pair the Bucs with Oklahoma State and N.C. State.
