Men’s golf continues fall campaign at Inverness Intercollegiate

Sunday, September 25, 2011

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (September 25, 2011) – After kicking off the season two weeks ago, the ETSU men's golf team returns to action to participate in the Inverness Intercollegiate on Monday and Tuesday, Sept. 26-27, at the par-71, 7,255-yard Inverness Club in Toledo, Ohio.

ETSU will join No. 6 Florida, No. 23 Ohio State, No. 32 Kent State, No. 33 Liberty, No. 34 Michigan and Michigan State, in addition to host-school Toledo, Kentucky, Penn State and South Alabama in the 11-team field for the 54-hole tournament.

The Bucs are coming off a 12th place showing at the season opening Northern Intercollegiate. Rhys Enoch (Cornwall, England) led the team with a 20th place showing in the individual standings.

ETSU freshman Rhys Pugh (Pontypridd, Wales) will make his much anticipated collegiate debut. Pugh missed the first tournament of the season, because he was participating in the prestigious Walker Cup matches in Scotland. During the Walker Cup, Pugh finished with a perfect 3-0 record, the only player to finish the event with an unblemished record.

The Bucs lineup will also consist of Spencer Lawson (Raleigh, N.C.), a 2011 Atlantic Sun All-Freshman Team member, freshman Scott Gibson (Dumfries, Scotland) and freshman Sam Edwards (Bigbury, England). In addition, freshman Tom Heggarty (Cheshire, England) will compete as an individual.

Four of the seven champions of the Inverness Intercollegiate have come from the Southeastern Conference (SEC) with Florida (2002, 2005), South Carolina (2000) and Kentucky (2004) taking home titles. Florida State (2007), Southern Cal (2006) and UCLA (2003) are the only non-SEC teams to win the title.

The Inverness Club was founded in 1903 and along with the University of Toledo served as host for the 2009 NCAA Men's Golf Championships. Inverness has also hosted four U.S. Opens, two U.S. Senior Opens, two PGA Championships and one U.S. Amateur.

Play will get underway at 9:00 a.m. on Monday with a shotgun start, followed by round two beginning at 1:00 p.m. The Bucs are paired with Kentucky and Penn State for the first two rounds. Live coverage will be available at Golfstat.com.
