Sunday, February 21, 2010
RIO GRANDE, P.R. (Feb. 21, 2010) - Senior Seamus Power (Waterford, Ireland) fired a 4-under-par 68 and true freshman Garth McGee (Bangor, Northern Ireland) posted a 3-under-par 69 to power the ETSU men's golf team to a strong start during Sunday's first round action in the Puerto Rico Classic at the Rio Mar Golf Club's River Course.
Power, McGee, and the rest of the 33rd-ranked Buccaneers find themselves in fourth place after the first day, nine strokes back of team leader and No. 1-ranked Oklahoma State. Individually, Power is tied for third, while McGee is tied for sixth. Oklahoma State's Kevin Tway leads at 7-under for the tournament.
The Bucs are currently seven strokes back of No. 9 Texas, and just three strokes off the pace of No. 28 Clemson. More impressive, ETSU is ahead of No. 18 Georgia Tech, No. 23 Georgia, and No. 12 Alabama.
Along with Power and McGee's efforts, the Bucs also got a 1-under-par 71 showing from junior Paul O'Kane (Castledawson, Northern Ireland) to tie for 26th. Other ETSU results included a tie for 59th by sophomore Michael Stewart (Troon, Scotlan), while junior Rhys Enoch (Cornwall, England) is tied for 64th.
