Power, Bucs lead at General Jim Hackler event

Sunday, March 14, 2010

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (March 14, 2010) - Senior Seamus Power (Waterford, Ireland) fired rounds of 69 and 71 to take the individual lead, helping power the No. 31-ranked ETSU men's golf team to a first place showing after first and second round play in the General Jim Hackler Championship Sunday at the TPC of Myrtle Beach.

The Bucs finished the day at 587 (294-293) and lead second place Pepperdine by four strokes. ETSU finds itself ahead of teams such as No. 7 Augusta State, Wake Forest, N.C. State, Duke, and host Coastal Carolina. Power currently stands at 4-under for the event, and leads Wake Forest's Brendan Gielow by one stroke on the individual leaderboard.

"This course is a great test of golf and is a real challenge," said ETSU head coach Fred Warren. "Even with the cold and windy conditions, I thought our guys handled it well, especially the way Seamus, Rhys and Michael played. We're happy to be leading by four strokes, but that is nothing on a difficult course like this one. That can disappear in just one hole, and our players are aware of that."

Along with Power's efforts, junior Rhys Enoch (Cornwall, England) is tied for fourth at 144 (73-71), while sophomore Michael Stewart (Troon, Scotland) is tied for 28th at 153 (76-77). Other ETSU results include a tie for 33rd by sophomore Paul O'Kane (Castledawson, Northern Ireland), while freshman Garth McGee (Bangor, Northern Ireland) is tied for 50th.

Third and final round action at the General Jim Hackler Championship is scheduled for Monday. Fans can watch live scoring courtesy of Golfstat.com, or visit ETSUBucs.com following the day's action for a complete wrap up.
