Former ETSU star Davies misses cut at British Open
Friday, July 17, 2009
TURNBERRY, Scotland (July 17, 2009) - Battling poor weather conditions, former ETSU standout Rhys Davies (Bridgend, Wales) was unable to make a move on the leaderboard during Friday's second round at the 138th British Open, posting a score of 4-over-par 74 on the Aisla Championship Course.
With his 74 on Friday, Davies finished tied for 96th in the 155-player field at 7-over 147 after the second round, which was not good enough to make the cut and stay for the weekend's third and fourth rounds. Davies' day got off to a good start with a birdie on the first hole, but the day later included four bogeys on the front nine and a double bogey on No. 15 before a second birdie on 17.
Davies, who played at ETSU from 2003-2007 and was a three-time first-team All-American, has now played in two major championships. He qualified for and played in the 2007 U.S. Open just weeks after graduating from ETSU, but he has yet to make the cut in a major. He holds multiple school records at ETSU including most career wins with 10. He spent much of his senior season ranked No. 1 in the country, and has played the last two years professionally in Asia and Europe.
