Vols edge Beavers in scorecard playoff

JONESBOROUGH, Tenn. (Oct. 18, 2009) - The Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate has become a home-away-from-home experience for the Tennessee Volunteers.

The 21st-ranked Vols tied for the team championship with Pac-10 member and 13th-ranked Oregon State on Sunday, as the two teams finished the third and final round tied at 3-under-par 861. Tennessee was declared the winner based on head-to-head scoring for each of the teams' fifth player. It marks the third time the Vols have captured the BOT Intercollegiate title.

"We just love this tournament and everything about it," said Tennessee head coach Jim Kelson, whose team also won the event in 2004 and 2006. "It's a great tournament with a strong field. I was proud of the run we made and our guys showed a lot of focus at the end."

While Tennessee and Oregon State battled it out in the team competition, the Beavers' Diego Velasquez left no drama on the individual leaderboard. Leading from start to finish, Velasquez ended the event at 10-under 206 (66-70-70) and won by seven strokes over a trio of players tied at 3-under 213.

"I knew I just had to make pars today and people behind me had to catch up," Velasquez said. "I eagled No. 8 and that really helped me keep some momentum. On the back I was even, which is what I wanted to do."

As for the hosts, the ETSU Buccaneers moved up the leaderboard for the second straight day and finished tied for sixth. Junior Rhys Enoch (Cornwall, England) once again led the Bucs with a 1-under round of 71 Sunday, finishing tied for fifth on the leaderboard. As a team, ETSU ended the event at 10-over 874, 13 strokes back of the Vols and Beavers.

"I thought the guys played well again today and we got off to a pretty good start," said ETSU head coach Fred Warren. "I hope we learned some things and can get better. We look forward to our next tournament and another opportunity."

Other ETSU results included a tie for 20th by senior Seamus Power (Waterford, Ireland), while both sophomore Devin Komline (Dorset, Vermont) and Paul O'Kane (Castledawson, Northern Ireland) finished tied for 34th.

The Bucs will return to action Oct. 25th in the Isleworth Collegiate Invitational. For more on ETSU men's golf throughout the 2009-10 season, visit ETSUBucs.com and click on the men's golf link.
