Enoch tied for second on individual leaderboard

JONESBOROUGH, Tenn. (Oct. 24, 2008) - Despite treacherous course conditions for much of the afternoon, the ETSU men's golf team took advantage of playing its home course to post a team score of even par 288 and take a two stroke lead after first round action in the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate at the Ridges.

The Buccaneers, who have never won their host tournament in its previous 10 years of existence, simply used solid individual play from its entire lineup to finish in the team lead. No ETSU player scored worse than a 1-over 73, while sophomore Rhys Enoch (Cornwall, England) led the way for the Bucs with a score of 1-under 71 to finish tied for second individually.

"A very good start I'm proud of the guys," ETSU head coach Fred Warren told the Johnson City Press. "It would be easy to play yourself out in these conditions. The guys hung in there. Everybody stayed around par all day. Even is a good score today."

While the Bucs lead, they hold a precarious two-stroke edge over No. 22-ranked Coastal Carolina and N.C. State at 290, while Wake Forest is just three strokes back in fourth.

Individually, N.C. State's Matt Hill and Darren Blair finished first and second on the team leaderboard, with Hill - the nation's No. 1-ranked player according to the Golfweek/Sagarin rankings - posting a day's best round at 2-under 70. Meanwhile, Blair joined Enoch and eight others at 71.

As for the rest of the Bucs, freshman Devin Komline (Dorset, Vermont) and sophomore Paul O'Kane (Castledawson, Northern Ireland) are tied for 10th at even par 72, while junior Seamus Power (Waterford, Ireland) and freshman Michael Stewart (Troon, Scotland) are tied for 20th at 1-over 73.

Second round play will continue on Saturday, followed by third and final round action on Sunday. Fans can keep up with live scoring by visiting Golfstat.com, or getting a complete wrap up of the day's events by visiting ETSUBucs.com and the conclusion of play each day.
