Davies earns spot in match play competition, but falls in first round of U.S. Amateur

CHASKA, Minn. (Aug. 23, 2006) - After posting a pair of 73s on Tuesday to qualify for the start of match play Wednesday at the U.S. Amateur, ETSU senior Rhys Davies (Bridgend, Wales) could not overcome the torrid start of his opponent Antti Ahokas at the Hazeltine National Golf Club.

After five holes in the first round of match play, Davies and Ahokas - a native of Finland - were even. However, at that point Ahokas rattled off three straight birdies to lead 3 up after eight holes. A par by Davies on the 11th cut the lead by one, but another birdie at 12 allowed Ahokas the cruise the rest of the way.

Davies, who finished the 2005-06 season ranked No. 4 nationally, advanced to the round of 16 at the U.S. Amateur in 2005, but saw his bid at this year's event end abruptly. Regardless, Davies continues to build an impressive amateur career with a program-best seven individual titles at ETSU, a win in the Scratch Players Championship last week, and appearances in both the Palmer and Walker Cups.

Davies will join his ETSU teammates later this week for the start of school, as the Bucs prepare for a season that could begin with a Top 10 national ranking. ETSU opens its fall slate of tournaments Sept. 15 in the Carpet Capital Collegiate in Dalton, Ga.
