Shaw, Davies fire sub-70 rounds; Bucs lead by 10 strokes at A-Sun Championships
Tuesday, April 17, 2007
Power, who entered the day tied atop the individual leaderboard, is now in sole possession of first place by three strokes and stands at 2-under 140 (73-67) for the tournament. The highlight of Power's day came on the No. 13 Par 3, when his 7-iron from 180 yards away found the bottom of the hole for an ace. The eagle helped result in a 9-hole effort of 29 for Power. Meanwhile, Davies - the two-time, first-team All-American and the nation's No. 3-ranked player - rallied from a disappointing first round to post his 3-under 68 and move from a tie for 16th to a tie for fifth.
"Yesterday it was really windy and the conditions were awful," said ETSU head coach Fred Warren, whose team will be vying for its first A-Sun title and the program's 18th conference championships overall on Wednesday. "Today, the conditions were better and the guys played better. We weren't that good on the front nine, but in the space of an hour on the back we had an eagle and seven birdies, so I knew we were going to put up a good score."
As a team, the Buccaneers are 10 strokes better than second place North Florida after posting a team score of 6-under 278 Tuesday. It was a complete effort from the Bucs, as junior Gareth Shaw (Lisburn, Northern Ireland) continued his steady play with a 1-over 72 to finish fourth on the leaderboard, while sophomore Jordan Findlay (Fraserburgh, Scotland) rebounded from a tough score on Monday to post a 1-under 71 and help the ETSU cause.
While the Bucs' play on the course primarily led to the comfortable lead, ETSU also gained strokes on the field thanks to a scoring mistake by UNF's Mike Giammaresi. The error occurred on the 17th hole of Monday's first round, and resulted in Giammaresi's score being thrown out, making the Ospreys count a higher score, ultimately costing them eight strokes.
ETSU will continue with third and final round play from the A-Sun Championships on Wednesday and live scoring is available at Golfstat.com. A complete wrap up of the day's play will be available later in the evening at ETSUBucs.com.
