ETSU men's golf finished 12th at Birkdale Collegiate Classic

HUNTERSVILLE, N.C. (March 16, 2003) - East Tennessee State's men's golf team concluded play at the Birkdale Collegiate Classic finishing in 12th place after Sunday's 10-over-par team score of 298. The Buccaneers finished the tournament with a two-round score of 605. North Carolina won the event, which was shortened to two rounds after weather suspended play on Saturday. UNC finished the tournament 3-under-par with a two-day total of 573, while Virginia Tech, the first-round leader, finished in second place with a team score of 580, which was five strokes better than Georgia Southern's 585. Individually, North Carolina's Ramon Bescansa finished play atop the leaderboard after shooting a 3-under-par 69 on Saturday and one stroke better 68 on Sunday for a two-day total of 137. Bescansa barely edged Old Dominion's Geoffrey Harris (138) and Coastal Carolina's Alvero Velasco (141), who finished second and third, respectively. For the Bucs, sophomore Cennydd Mills (Cardiff, Wales) led the team, finishing in a four-way tie for 28th place, shooting a 5-over 149. Fellow sophomores Jeremy Hobson (Thonotosassa, Fla.) and Chase Baldwin (Brandon, Fla.) were next finishing tied for 32nd place. Hobson shot a 4-over 76 on Sunday, while Baldwin carded a 2-over 74 for a two-day score of 150. Rounding out the pack were ETSU seniors James Johnson (Barbados) and Adam Riddering (Maple Grove, Minn.). Johnson completed play with a 156 after scoring a 4-over 77 on Sunday. Riddering also tallied a second round score of 77, giving him a score of 158 for the tournament.
