AUBURN, Ala. (May 16, 2003) - With one round to play in the NCAA East Regional at the Auburn University Club, the East Tennessee State men's golf team is six strokes removed from 10th place and a berth in the NCAA Championships to be played May 27-30 in Stillwater, Okla.
The Buccaneers shot a team score of 8-over-par 296 during second round play Friday and have a combined, two-day score of 593 which is good enough for a 16th-place finish heading into today's one remaining round.
Freshman Derek McNamara (Galway, Ireland) is currently the top individual performer for the Bucs, shooting a 1-under 71 on Friday to finish in a tie for 38th place (75-71=146 +2). Meanwhile, senior James Johnson (Barbados) finished tied for 44th (72-75=147 +3), sophomore Cennydd Mills (Cardiff, Wales) placed in a tie for 66th (74-76=150 +6), and sophomores Chase Baldwin (Plant City, Fla.) and Jeremy Hobson (Thonotosassa, Fla.) both rounded out the ETSU efforts tied for 94th at 10-over-par for the event.
Clemson overtook Tennessee for the team lead and currently holds the advantage over the rest of the field at 14-under for the tournament. In addition, Georgia Tech's Troy Matteson is now topping the individual leaderboard at 9-under-par (68-67=135). Third and final round play in the regional will continue today in Auburn.
