KAUA’I, Hawai'i (Nov. 4, 2012) – The ETSU men’s golf team wraps up its fall season this week when the Bucs partake in the inaugural Warrior-Wave Intercollegiate, which is held at the Makai Golf Club at the St. Regis Princeville Resort. The three-day, 54-hole tournament begins Monday.
LAST TIME OUT FOR THE BUCS
ETSU last competed two weeks ago at the U.S. Collegiate Championship at the The Golf Club of Georgia – Lakeside Course. Going head-to-head with some of the top teams in the country, the Bucs put together an 11th-place finish after totaling a three-round score of 892, and placed ahead of then No. 22 Wake Forest, No. 16 Kent State, No. 17 Texas A&M, and Iowa. Freshman Gudmundur Kristjansson (Reykjavik, Iceland) finished the final round with an impressive 4-under-par 68 and tied for 20th at 4-over-par 220. Meanwhile, fellow freshman Adrian Meronk (Wroclaw, Poland) paced the Blue and Gold after tying for 13th at 3-over 219.
ABOUT THE THIS WEEK’S TOURNAMENT
The first-annual Warrior-Wave Intercollegiate is co-hosted by the University of Hawai’i and Pepperdine University. The golfers will play 18 holes each day with the champion being crowned on Wednesday.
Joining ETSU, Hawai’i, and Pepperdine, will be Baylor, Cal State Fullerton, Fresno State, Georgia Southern, Indiana, North Carolina State, San Diego State, San Diego, UAB, UC Irvine, UC Santa Barbara, and Xavier. Five teams in the field are ranked within the top-50 of the Golfweek/Sagarin ratings, as well as four teams in the top 50 of the Golfstat.com rankings.
The Makai Golf Club at the St. Regis Princeville Resort Course plays 7,223 yards and is a par-72. The Makai Golf Club has been ranked one of the top five Great Golf Settings from National Geographic, as well as one of the top 75 Best Golf Resorts according to Golf Digest and the top 100 Golf Resorts from Travel & Leisure.
The Bucs send out the same lineup they have sent out all fall, which consists of two sophomores and three freshmen. Along with Kristjansson and Meronk will be sophomores Rhys Pugh (Pontypridd, Wales) and Scott Gibson (Southerness, Scotland) and freshman Chris Hickman (Centreville, Md.).
