JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (July 27, 2011) – ETSU head men’s golf coach Fred Warren recently announced the signing of five student-athletes that will join the program for the upcoming 2011-12 season.
Sam Edwards (Bigbury, England), Scott Gibson (Dumfries, Scotland), Tom Heggarty (Cheshire, England), Justin Hulbert (Orlando, Fla.), and Rhys Pugh (Pontypridd, Wales) will join the Bucs during the fall.
Edwards comes to Johnson City with a lengthy resume of golf accomplishments. In 2010, he won the Devon Salver & Youth Championship after compiling a 141 (73-68) total to win by four shots. Edwards also qualified and advanced to the quarterfinals of the English Amateur Championship, while also qualifying for the British Boys Championship. Edwards was selected to the England under-18 squad for 2010-11 and was named Devon County First-Team, where he was selected to play in all six Channel League matches. In 2009, Edwards finished as the top amateur at the Devon PGA Open where he shot 9-under-par, missing a playoff by just one shot. Edwards won the Devon County Boys Championship after shooting a 64 to win by two shots and also won the Western Morning News Cup with a 141 total. He was also selected to represent England in two international matches against Scotland and Ireland.
Gibson joins the ETSU program after a very successful career on the junior golf scene. He is the only player ever to win the Scottish Schools Championship twice in a row (2009 & 2010). In 2010, Gibson won the event with a two-day total of 136 (70-66) where he finished three shots clear of the field. Gibson was also a member of the Scotland under-16 team in 2008 and the under-18 team in ’09-’10. In addition, he was a member of the Great Britain and Ireland Team in 2010. He also represented Scotland in the 2010 Boys Home Internationals, where he won his last four matches of the event to lead Scotland to a second place finish.
Heggarty, a native of Cheshire, England, won the under-16 Junior Club Championship in 2008 and the under-18 in 2009. He has represented Cheshire at both the men’s and boy’s levels and participated in the North of England Amateur Championship in 2009. Heggarty finished third in the Cheshire Junior Championship in 2009 and played in both the English & Scottish under-16 events last year. Heggarty also finished eighth at the Chesire Union of Golf Clubs Boys Championship in 2010 with a two-day total of 1-over-par.
Hulbert joins the Buccaneer program from The First Academy in Orlando, Fla. Hulbert earned a third place finish at the 2010 Disney Classic, while earning a top-20 finish at this year’s 54 Hole Mid Season Championship on the Hurricane Junior Golf Tour. He was a multi-sport star for The First Academy as he was also a star on the baseball field. His father, Mike, was an All-American at ETSU in 1979 and 1980. In addition, he won the Southern Conference individual title during his senior year. He is perhaps most known for his days on the PGA Tour, where he won three times.
Pugh comes to ETSU after a storied amateur career. In 2010, he won the Peter McEvoy and Fairhaven trophies. Pugh became the youngest player to represent Wales at the senior level in the Men’s Home Internationals (15 years old). He also represented Wales in the European Men’s and Eisenhower Trophy, while also leading the under-18 Great Britain and Ireland Team as the captain. Perhaps his biggest golfing accomplishment was winning the Irish Amateur Open earlier this year. He was only the second Welshman to win the title in the 119-year history of the event. Pugh has earned two British under-18 Championships, three Welsh Order of Merit titles, two Clwyd Open titles, and a title at Aberconwy. He was named Welsh Amateur of the Year in 2009.
The five newcomers join three returning letterwinners on the Buccaneers’ squad. Spencer Lawson (Raleigh, N.C.) was named to the Atlantic Sun All-Freshman Team last season and he joins seniors Rhys Enoch (Cornwall, England) and Peter Wilson (Locust Valley, N.Y.) that are former letterwinners returning. Enoch, a former All-American, sat out much of last season due to an injury, while Wilson played much of the fall until he sat out the spring with an injured thumb.
