This Week in ETSU Athletics: Sept. 10-16

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Sept. 10, 2012) Below are the ETSU athletic events for the week of Sept. 10-16.

Cross Country

This week: The Bucs return to action on Friday night when ETSU travels to Blacksburg, Va. for the Virginia Tech Invitational. The women will begin the race with a 5K run at 6 p.m., while the men follow with an 8K race at 6:40 p.m. from the Tech Cross Country Course. The course is located on campus behind the indoor/outdoor track and Vet-Med School, while the terrain will consist of all grass over rolling hills.

Men’s Golf

This week: ETSU opens the 2012-13 season on Saturday when the Bucs play in the Tar Heel Intercollegiate in Chapel Hill, N.C. The tournament will be held at the UNC Finley Golf Course and concludes on Sunday.

Men’s Soccer (4-1-0)

This week: The Bucs embark on a season-long four-game road swing beginning Saturday night at Davidson. Game time is set for 7 p.m. at Alumni Stadium. Fans unable to make the trip to North Carolina can watch the game online through DavidsonWildcats.com or follow via live stats on ETSUBucs.com.

Last week: ETSU won its fourth straight match as the Blue and Gold pulled out another double overtime victory (2-1) over Radford on Saturday night at Summers-Taylor Stadium. Junior transfer Luis Calzadilla (Caracas, Venezuela) provided the heroics as he scored both goals for the Bucs, including the game-winning score on a penalty kick. Radford’s Matt Janssen was called for a handball inside the penalty area with 5:04 left in the final period, setting the stage for Calzadilla who beat keeper Ryan Taylor to the left side of goal. The goal was the Appalachian State transfer’s second of the night, after equalizing the game with exactly 10 minutes left in regulation.

Women’s Soccer (6-1-0)

This week: The Lady Bucs make their final tune-up before opening conference play when ETSU travels to Farmville, Va. on Friday night (7 p.m.) to take on Longwood. Live stats will be provided through ETSUBucs.com.

Last week: ETSU extended its home unbeaten streak to 12 straight games after defeating Western Carolina (3-2) on Friday night and Winthrop (4-2) Sunday afternoon at Summers-Taylor Stadium. Junior Ramey Kerns (Kings Mountain, N.C.) had a monster weekend as she started things off with a hat-trick against the Catamounts, while adding a goal and two assists in the two-goal win over the Eagles. Freshman Sarah Zadrazil (St. Gilgen, Austria) added a pair of goals versus Western Carolina, while registering an assist in both matches over the weekend. Following Kerns’ four goals this weekend, the Kings Mountain, N.C. moved her season total to an astonishing nine scores on the year.

Men’s Tennis

This week: Idle

Last week: Rogerio Ribeiro (Sao Paulo, Brazil) won four singles matches to advance all the way to the Division II semifinals at the 45th annual Southern Intercollegiate. Ribeiro posted a win in the quarters on Sunday, and won the first set in the semis before dropping the final two.

Women’s Tennis

This week: Idle

Last week: Women's tennis picked up two titles at the UNCW-Landfall Invitational. Newcomers Larn McShane (Hobart Tasmania, Australia) and Antonia Kolovou (Larisa, Greece) won the doubles B Flight on Saturday, and freshman Anna Gerbasi (Caracas, Venezuela) won the singles C Flight on Sunday.

Volleyball (8-5)

This week: The ETSU volleyball team looks to bounce back into the win column when the Blue and Gold host Western Carolina on Tuesday night. First serve is slated for 7 p.m. inside Brooks Gym. Fans unable to make the trip to Johnson City can watch all the action for free on A-Sun.TV, while live stats will also be available through ETSUBucs.com.

Last week: ETSU dropped three of its four matches at the Hampton Inn Bama Bash over the weekend in Tuscaloosa. The Bucs held on for a five-set win (25-15, 24-26, 25-19, 22-25, 15-11) over Alabama State to open the tournament on Friday, but then dropped matches to Austin Peay (3-0), Lamar (3-1), and Alabama (3-0).
