Jalovy, Grosskopff Continue to Pace Buccaneers

BOONE, N.C. (Oct. 14, 2011) – Making its final tune-up before the Atlantic Sun Conference Championships, the ETSU men’s cross country team turned in a respectable sixth-place finish on Friday evening at the Blue Ridge Open in Boone, N.C.

For the second straight meet, a pair of freshman runners led the men’s and women’s cross country teams across the finish line as Filip Jalovy (Modrice, Czech Republic) and Isabelle Grosskopff (Telgte, Germany) continued to turn in strong efforts on the State Farm Fields. Competing in a field of 201 runners, Jalovy averaged a 5-minute, 11-second mile to place 18th overall with a time of 25:44.7 on the 8K course. Meanwhile, Grosskopff – who was fresh off her fifth-place showing two weeks ago in Louisville – clocked in at 18:49.5 to finish 12th out of 177 competitors in the women’s 5K Gold race.

Back on the men’s side, the Bucs edged out the likes of Charlotte and former conference foe Campbell, finishing with 188 total points. George Mason beat Wake Forest by 17 points to claim the team title – 40 to 57.

Individually, Cameron Bean from Zap fitness won the 8K Gold race after running a time of 24:25.1, while High Point’s Patrick Crawford was the first collegiate runner to cross the line in 24:38.2.

Joining Jalovy with respectable outings were Anders Ludvigsen (Odense, Denmark), Landon Milhorn (The Woodlands, Texas), and Sean Duffy (Jonesborough, Tenn.). Ludvigsen turned in a time of 25:55.1, which was strong enough for a 27th-place posting, while Milhorn was right behind his teammate in 33rd with a mark of 25:59.6. Rounding out the Buccaneer attack was Duffy in 40th-place (26:11.6).

On the women’s side, sophomore Chelsea Clark (Fairmont, W. Va.) continued her stellar season on Friday evening as she was the second Buccaneer runner to cross the tape in Boone. Clark averaged a 6-minute, 10-second mile to place 30th overall (19:11).

Furman took home the team title after collecting 56 points, while Wake Forest’s Nicole Irving – the individual champion (17:43.4) – led her Demon Deacon squad to a second-place finish with 77 team points. As a team, ETSU placed 14th in the 21-team field.

The Bucs will now have two weeks  to prepare for the A-Sun Championships, as both the men’s and women’s champions will be crowned on Saturday, Oct. 29 in Nashville, Tenn.
