Men's Cross Country Takes First at Campbell Early Bird Classic

BUIES CREEK, N.C. (August 30, 2003) - The East Tennessee State University men's and women's cross country teams began the 2003 season at the Campbell Early Bird Classic hosted by Campbell University on Saturday. ETSU won the men's field in the 5K race, placing five runners in the top-ten spots. Junior Bradley Yewer (Newbury, England) finished first for the Buccaneers with a time of 15:46.55 and took second place overall. Sophomore Peter Dalton (Dublin, Ireland) had one of his best overall starts and finished second on the team with a time of 15:51.64 and third overall. "This is a good solid start for the squad this year," commented head coach David E. Walker. "We have good depth and my expectation is for us to continue to improve." In the women's 4K race ETSU took third place. Senior Emily Chaney (Maryville, Tenn.) finished first with a time of 15:31.15 and an overall fourth-place finish. Teammates Katie Marshall (Metuchen, N.J.) and Christine Ward (Candler, N.C.) also ran well and placed 14th and 16th, respectively. "I was very impressed by our team and the solid outing at today's meet," said assistant coach Michelle Byrne. "Emily had a solid race today and will only improve as the season progresses. Christine showed a lot of improvement and that she is willing to put in the required work and step up on the team." The Buccaneer cross country team will travel to Davidson, N.C. to compete in the Pre-Conference Invitational on September 13.
