Home game with VCU, road games at major conference powers like North Carolina and trip to Diamond Head Classic highlight new slate

JOHNSON CITY (July 7, 2012) – A visit from 2011 Final Four participant VCU, road games at major programs such as North Carolina, Ole Miss, Georgia and Virginia Tech, and a Christmas visit to the Hawaiian Islands highlight the 2012-13 ETSU men’s basketball schedule released Saturday by head coach Murry Bartow.

“As always, our early season schedule will be a challenge with a lot of games on the road against some really strong programs like North Carolina,” Bartow said. “We do like the trip to Hawaii and the exposure that will give our program on ESPN’s family of channels, and we think the home schedule this year will offer some great matchups for our fans.”

The Buccaneers, who have reached postseason play five times in nine seasons under Bartow, will open their season with a home exhibition game against Carson-Newman on Nov. 3. ETSU will then begin regular season play for the second straight year at Virginia Tech, taking on the Hokies Nov. 10. ETSU’s home opener will then follow on Saturday, Nov. 17 against Tennessee Tech, but the highlight of the Bucs’ home slate will be a Jan. 2 visit from VCU.

“Hosting VCU, a Final Four team from two years ago, should be a lot of fun for our fans,” Bartow said. “They obviously have a great program and have really made a name for themselves recently on the national stage.”

Prior to the VCU matchup and as the New Year approaches, the Bucs will tune up for the start of Atlantic Sun Conference play with a trip to the Hawaiian Islands to take part in ESPN’s Diamond Head Classic. The field for the tournament will include Arizona, Indiana State, Hawaii, Miami (Fla.), Ole Miss, San Diego State and San Francisco, with pairings to be announced at a later date.

“This will be one of the best tournaments from an exposure standpoint that we’ve played in,” Bartow said. “It’s a great opportunity for our program to get tremendous national exposure.”

The Bucs will open their A-Sun schedule on the road at Lipscomb (Jan. 5), beginning a stretch of 18 straight league games over the final two months of the season. The conference championship is set for March 6-9 in Macon Ga. For more on ETSU men’s basketball, visit ETSUBucs.com and click on the men’s basketball link.
