ETSU athletics releases statement on passing of Gene Bartow

Tuesday, January 03, 2012

JOHNSON CITY (Jan. 3, 2012) – The ETSU Department of Intercollegiate Athletics is deeply saddened to learn of the passing Tuesday evening of legendary men’s basketball head coach Gene Bartow.

Bartow, the father of current ETSU head men’s basketball coach Murry Bartow, had become a fixture at Buccaneer basketball games both at home and on the road over the last eight seasons, as he watched his son guide the ETSU program.

“On behalf of the entire ETSU athletic department, we pass along our condolences to the Bartow family,” said ETSU Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Dave Mullins. “Gene Bartow was a true gentleman and obviously one of the greatest head coaches in the history of college basketball. It was our great fortune to get to know him and have him as part of the Buccaneer family over the last eight years.”
