JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Feb. 19, 2005) - The East Tennessee State University men's basketball team made it three wins in a row inside Memorial Center, but the Austin Peay Governors did not make it easy.

Despite shooting 73 percent from the floor in the first half and holding a 55-32 lead at the intermission, the Buccaneers fell victim to Austin Peay's relentless full court pressure in the second half and the Governors rallied in the final 10 minutes of the game only to fall 85-81 in front of 4,144 fans on ESPN's Bracket Buster Saturday.

"It was a good win, but I'm glad it's over," said ETSU head coach Murry Bartow. "I'm glad there wasn't any time left. Austin Peay has won six of their last eight games and they showed a lot of fight out there. Now we've won three in a row and have a little momentum going into Monday's game against Chattanooga."

The Bucs, now 9-16 overall, roared out to an early lead thanks to the hot outside shooting of players like senior guard James Anthony (Tampa, Fla.) and junior guard Tim Smith (Newport News, Va.). Anthony was 4-of-4 in the first half, with all of those shots coming from beyond the 3-point arc, while Smith was 8-of-11 from the field. With the score close at 9-8 with 16:39 left before the intermission, the two helped the Bucs build a sizeable advantage thanks to outscoring the Governors 42-13 over the next 12 minutes and build a lead of as many as 30 points at 51-21.

However, in the second half, the Austin Peay defense picked up the pressure and the ETSU offense wilted. Methoically, the Governors created turnovers and easy baskets, and when the Bucs' inside duo of junior forward Dillion Sneed (Chicago) and freshman forward Andrew Reed (Port Richey, Fla.) both fouled out late in the game, Austin Peay exploited the Bucs on the inside with several easy shots in the paint. In the end, the Governors cut the lead to three points at 84-81 on a 3-pointer by Anthony Davis and had the ball with 20 seconds remaining in the game. However, ETSU's pressure caused guard Levi Carmichael to turn the ball over and the Bucs hit 1-of-2 foul shots to ice the win.

For the game, ETSU shot 57 percent from the floor and 55 percent from 3-point range, while also out-rebounding the Governors 38-37. Both teams struggled at the foul line, with the Bucs hitting at just 50 percent and Austin Peay connecting on 65 percent of its shots from the foul line.

ETSU was led in scoring by Smith, who posted a game-high 29 points, while Anthony posted 24 points and Sneed grabbed 10 rebounds.

For Austin Peay, Zac Schlader had a team-high 27 points, while Maurice Hampton collected 24 points and Anthony Davis added 18. William Durden pitched in 12 rebounds.

The Bucs will return to action on Monday night as they host Southern Conference rival Chattanooga at 7 p.m. It will be Senior Night for ETSU's senior class of guard Sam Oatman (Neenah, Wis.), guard Michael Tolliver (Bremo Bluff, Va.) and Anthony.
