Thursday, February 28, 2002

Asheville, N. C. (Feb. 28, 2001) - East Tennessee State's men's basketball team had two players named to the 2001-2002 Southern Conference Sports Media Association's All-SoCon team. Senior Dimeco Childress (Columbia, Tenn.) was named to the first team while sophomore Zakee Wadood (Lonoke, Ark.) was named to the second team by the conference media. Childress, the SoCon Player of the Year, has led the Buccaneers to their eight straight wins to close the regular season. Childress is fourth in the conference in scoring, averaging 17.6 points per game. In his last three home games he scored 35, 36 and 42 points, with his 42-point outing against Western Carolina setting a new Memorial Center record. During ETSU's winning streak he is averaging 22.9 points a game. Childress has scored 1,271 points in his career, eighth on ETSU's all-time scoring list. Wadood has become one of the best all-around forwards in the conference. He leads the league in rebounding with a 9.1 average, a mark that is the best by a Buccaneer since the 1982-83 season when Winfred King averaged 10.3 boards a game. Wadood is among the conference leaders in scoring (14.7), blocked shots (32) and steals (45). He also leads the conference in double-doubles with 10 so far this season. As the No. 2 seed in the North division, ETSU will play its first game at the SoCon Tournament on Friday, March 1st at approximately 8:30 p.m. against the winner of the College of Charleston/Appalachian State game that will be played on Thursday. All the games will be played in Charleston, S.C. at the North Charleston Coliseum.
