Men's Basketball Captures Southern Conference Title

Monday, February 26, 2001

Johnson City, Tenn. -- The East Tennessee State University mens basketball team earned its first Southern Conference regular-season championship since the 1991-92 season by finishing the 2000-01 campaign 13-3 in Conference action.

ETSU's 13 Conference wins tied for the most in program history, also reached during the 1993-94 season when the Bucs went 13-5 in SoCon action. Their Conference winning percentage (81.3) was the second best in program history. The 1989-90 and 1991-92 Bucs both went 12-2 (85.7) during the Conference slate.

Led by fifth-year head coach Ed DeChellis, the Bucs completed the regular season at 18-9 overall with a 66-65 win at Wofford on Feb. 24. It was the Bucs seventh road win, the most by any Southern Conference member.

"I am really proud of this team," DeChellis said. "It is very difficult to win the Southern Conference regular season title. This team played hard all year and deserves this honor. We have accomplished one of our goals and now its time to go after the second, winning the Southern Conference Tournament."

East Tennessee State, the No. 1 seed from the North, will open the 2001 Mountain Dew/Southern Conference Tournament at 6 p.m. on Friday, March 2 at the Bi-Lo Center in Greenville, S.C. The Bucs will face the winner of Georgia Southern, the Souths No. 4 seed, and VMI, No. 5 seed from the North.
