Men's Basketball Signs Zakee Wadood To NLI

Friday, April 28, 2000

Johnson City, Tenn. -- The East Tennessee State Men's Basketball team today announced that Zakee Wadood (Lonoke, Ark.), a 6-6 forward, has signed a National Letter of Intent and will join the Buccaneer program this fall. Wadood will play the four position for the Bucs, but has the ability to step out to the three position as well.

As a senior captain, Wadood averaged 20.6 points, 10.0 rebounds and 4.5 blocks per game as he led Lonoke High School to a 27-6 record and the second of its back-to-back Arkansas State Championships. This past season, Wadood capped off his high school career by playing in the Pittsburgh Hoops Addidas Classic this past March and he will play in the Arkansas High School Coaches Classic this July. As a junior, Wadood averaged 18.0 points, 8.0 rebounds and 4.0 rebounds. He is a three-time All-Conference honoree, a two-time All-Regional honoree, a two-time All-State honoree and a member of the All-Arkansas team. For the last two seasons, Wadood has been named the Most Valuable Player in the region and was named the Most Valuable Player of the 1999 Arkansas State Championship.

In addition, Wadood earned All-State honors as a quarterback for the Lonoke High football team and he has also excelled in the classroom where he carries a 3.35 GPA.

"Zakee is a good person and outstanding basketball player," said Lonoke Head Coach Derrick Harrell. "He is a tremendous defender, rebounder and shot blocker. He runs the floor extremely well and I think that his best basketball is ahead of him."

"Zakee is an outstanding addition to our basketball family and East Tennessee State University," said ETSU Head Coach Ed DeChellis. "He comes from a great high school program that competed for the state championship the past two years. He can give us help in the post as well as play on the perimeter."

Wadood joins Jerald Fields (Gainesville, Fla.) and Ryan Carson (Charlotte, N.C.) on the Bucs 2000-01 recruiting class.
