JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Jan. 7, 2013) – Below are a list of all the ETSU athletic events taking place for the week of Jan. 7-13.
Men’s Basketball (2-12, 0-1 A-Sun)
This week: The ETSU men’s basketball team begins the week by concluding its first road trip of the conference season, squaring off against the A-Sun’s newest member, Northern Kentucky (3-8, 1-2 A-Sun), on Monday night inside The Bank of Kentucky Center at 7:30 p.m. The Buccaneers then return to the ETSU/MSHA Athletic Center for their first pair of conference home games, battling Stetson (4-10, 1-2 A-Sun) on Thursday at 7 p.m., before taking on Florida Gulf Coast (10-6, 2-1 A-Sun) on Saturday at 4 p.m.

Last week: The Buccaneers welcomed 2011 NCAA Final Four participant VCU to Johnson City to begin the 2013 portion of the season under the new lighting system and setup inside the MSHA Athletic Center. Unfortunately for the Bucs, VCU’s Troy Daniels shot the lights out with an Atlantic 10 Conference record 11 made three pointers, accounting for all of his career-high 33 points in a 109-58 win for the Rams. The 109 points allowed by ETSU was the most its ever allowed inside the Dome, as the Buccaneers suffered their first loss of 50 points or more since the 2007 season. ETSU redshirt freshman Lester Wilson (Knoxville, Tenn.) led the way for the Bucs offensively, scoring a team-high 14 points, while sophomores John Walton (Memphis, Tenn.) and Rashawn Rembert (Tampa, Fla.) wound up with 11 points each.
Women’s Basketball (3-6, 1-1 A-Sun)
This week: The ETSU women’s basketball team kicks off the week on Monday evening, looking to jump above .500 in conference play with a win in their first ever meeting against Northern Kentucky (4-8, 1-2 A-Sun). Tip is set for 5 p.m. inside The Bank of Kentucky Center. The Lady Bucs then come home to take on defending Atlantic Sun champion FGCU (10-5, 3-0 A-Sun) in the first half of an ETSU basketball doubleheader on Saturday. Tip set for 1:30 p.m., inside the Dome.

Last week: ETSU began the A-Sun season by splitting a pair of road matchups against USC Upstate and Lipscomb. The week started on Wednesday against USC Upstate, with the Lady Bucs ending the game on a 30-13 run but still coming up short, 90-79. Shawn Randall (Orlando, Fla.) led the way for ETSU with 16 points, while junior Destiny Mitchell fell one point shy of a double-double with nine points and a team-high 12 rebounds.
Things turned around for ETSU on Saturday, earning an A-Sun victory by taking down Lipscomb in Nashville, 80-74. Three different Lady Bucs scored in double figures, with freshman guard Brianna McQueen (Jonesboro, Ga.) netting a career-and-game-high 23 points. Redshirt sophomore newcomer Serena Clark (Tucker, Ga.) put together a double-double with 10 points and 14 rebounds, while Randall had 13 points and a team-high four assists.
Men’s Tennis (0-0)
This week: The No. 71 ETSU men’s tennis team kicks off the spring season in Tuscaloosa, Ala., taking on the competition at the three-day Crimson Tide Indoor Invite. The tournament begins Friday and concludes on Sunday. Daily recaps and updated draws can be found at ETSUBucs.com. Dual matches for the Bucs begin next Saturday, Jan. 19, at No. 66 Wake Forest.
Last week: The ITA released its first poll of the 2013 season, slotting the Buccaneers No. 71 in its men’s team rankings. Senior Jesus Bandres (Caracas, Venezuela), last year’s A-Sun Tournament MVP, earned a regional singles ranking of No. 19 in the Ohio Valley. Meanwhile, Bandres and Roger Ordeig (Gurb, Spain) are ranked No. 7 in the region as a doubles tandem, while Juan Ramirez (Asuncion, Paraguay) and Jorge Varon (Valencia, Venezuela) earned a regional doubles ranking of No. 8.
Men’s and Women’s Track & Field
This week: The ETSU men’s and women’s track and field teams head to Birmingham, Ala., for the Blazer Invite. The meet begins on Thursday night at 7 p.m., with the men’s and women’s 5K run, while all other events will take place Friday. The invite will be the ETSU men’s and women’s second of the indoor season, having already competed at Clemson’s Orange and Purple Winter Classic on the first day of December.
