ETSU Winds Up Two-A-Days With Lively Scrimmage

Thursday, August 22, 2002

Johnson City, Tenn. (Aug. 22, 2002) - East Tennessee State' football team wound up its two-a-day portion of fall practice with its second scrimmage of the fall season. Sophomore Jason Davis (Sevierville, Tenn.) was the surprise star of the evening, getting all the snaps during the second half of the scrimmage and moving the offense up and down the field after a lackluster effort by the unit to that point. Davis, who had been moved to kicking duties, had not even practiced with the quarterbacks all week and played in the scrimmage with a kicking shoe on his right foot. A number of other players also had impressive performances, including senior linebacker Justin Reinier (Panorama City, Calif.) who was in on a number of big hits, intercepted one pass, sacked the quarterback in the end zone for a safety and recovered a fumble. Walk-on kicker Braye Walters (Columbia, S.C.) secured a spot as the team's kickoff specialist with a couple of booming kickoffs into the end zone. "I felt like our offensive football team improved in the back half of the scrimmage," said head coach Paul Hamilton. "Certainly Jason Davis gave the offense a lift. His ability to spread the ball around throwing it and getting it in our receivers hands and mixing the running game in with that gave us some balance that we had lacked. "I think our defense continues to play well. We are a little banged up right now, but they should be back for the N.C. State game. Overall I think we have progressed a great deal in our preseason practice. I was pleased with our kicking game last night; Braye Walters proved to me that he is our kickoff guy. What we have to do now is fine tune and get everyone healthy.
