Buccaneer Football Falls to Appalachian State, 33-14

Johnson City, Tenn. -- The East Tennessee State football team fell behind 17-0 at the half and could not recover as they fell 33-14 to Apppalachian State Saturday afternoon from Kidd Brewer Stadium in Boone, N.C. Appalachian State (3-1, 2-0) opened the scoring on their first drive as kicker Erik Rockhold connected on a 30-yard field goal with 11:03 remaining in the first quarter. After an ETSU (1-3, 0-2) punt, the Mountaineers would get on the board again as Joey Hoover would punch it in from one yard out to make the score 10-0 in favor of Appalachian State. After another ETSU punt, the Mountaineers would strike again. Hoover would score his second touchdown as he would fumble near the goal line and recover his own fumble in the end zone. That score would put Appalachian State up 17-0 at the half. Appalachian State would also open up the scoring in the second half, as Sterling Hayward would haul in a 22-yard touchdown pass from Joe Burchette to make the score 23-0 after a missed extra point. The Bucs would get on the board with five seconds remaining in the third when quarterback Matt Wilhjelm would score on a keeper on 3rd and goal. The run would bring the Bucs within 16 points at 23-7. Appalachian State would put the game out of reach with consecutive scores to begin the fourth quarter. Mark Wright kicked a 20 yard field goal with 10:29 remaining in the fourth quarter, and less than three minutes later, Sean Jackson would get in the end zone on a 20-yard scamper to make the score 33-7 in favor of the Mountaineers. ETSU quarterback Jatavis Sanders would cap the scoring with a 6-yard touchdown pass to Allen Johnson, to make the final score 33-14. The Bucs were led by junior wide receiver Cecil Moore, who pulled down nine passes for 136 yards. Sanders, getting his first meaningful playing time of the season, went 7-10 passing with 175 yards passing and a touchdown.
