Johnson City, Tenn. -- East Tennessee State seniors Todd Wells (Forest Park, Ga.) and Rahim El Amin (Orangeburg, S.C.) earned Southern Conference honors on October 23. Wells earned Southern Conference Offensive Player-of-the-Week while El Amin earned co-Defensive Player-of-the-Week honors for their outstanding performances in a 23-21 win against #6-ranked Furman on Saturday, October 21.
The Bucs quarterback, Wells enjoyed one of the best offensive games in ETSU history. The All-Conference candidate was 23-of-44 for 336 yards and two touchdowns through the air. He also notched 65 yards and one touchdown on the ground. Wells passing yardage and 401 yards of total offense ranks second on ETSUs all-time single-game list. As a freshman in 1997, Wells threw for 377 yards and gained 447 total yards against Appalachian State.
After seven games in 2000, Wells has thrown for 1,696 yards on 119-of-216 passing and ranks second on the team in rushing (259 yards). In his career, he ranks second on ETSUs all-time career list with 7,709 yards of total offense -- 523 yards behind Greg Ryan.
An All-America candidate, El Amin recorded 12 tackles (10 solo), including one for loss, in the win against Furman. El Amin also forced three turnovers -- he tipped a Furman pass to Ryan Vaughn for an interception and crushed the Paladins Billy Napier on a pass that allowed Russ Lindgren to make an interception on a wobbly pass.
The inside linebacker made the play of the game late in the fourth quarter. With the Bucs trailing 21-14, and Furman on ETSUs 1-yard line, El Amin forced a Louis Ivory fumble that was recovered by Lee Neisz. ETSU drove 96 yards and closed the score to 21-20.
After seven games in 2000, El Amin leads the team in total tackles (76) and solo tackles (55). He ranks second in tackles for loss (8) and has recorded 1.5 sacks. El Amin has broken up four passes, forced a fumble and recovered a fumble in the endzone for a touchdown at Liberty.
