Buccaneer duo receive CollegeBaseballInsider.com/Louisville Slugger All-American honors

RICHMOND, Va. (Aug. 16, 2013) – The ETSU baseball team will be gearing up for the 2014 campaign in the upcoming weeks, but Kerry Doane (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) and Clinton Freeman (Jonesborough, Tenn.) continued receiving more accolades for their dominating efforts on the diamond last season.

Doane and Freeman both received CollegeBaseballInsider.com/Louisville Slugger All-American honors, which was released from the committee on Friday. Doane was named Second Team All-American as a starting pitcher, while Freeman picked up the Honorable Mention honor as a utility player.

“This is another great honor for Kerry and Clint,” said ETSU head coach Tony Skole. “I'm not sure if I will ever see a pitcher have a more dominating year than Kerry had.

“Clint has just continued to get better and better each year. I'm happy he was recognized in the utility category, because what he did on the mound for us out of the bullpen was really remarkable. His pitching success sometimes gets overshadowed due to his offensive success.”

Doane, who had already received three previous All-American honors earlier this summer, finished his senior season with a 13-2 record, while leading the nation in complete games (12), innings (147.0) and shutouts (4).

Doane, a 24th round draft pick by the Cleveland Indians, became the first Buccaneer player to receive Atlantic Sun Pitcher of the Year and Tournament Most Valuable Player honors this past May. The Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. native was named Louisville Slugger First Team All-American and Second Team All-American by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association, while also being one of 30 semifinalists for the Golden Spikes Award and one of 22 players to be placed on the National Pitcher of the Year Watch list.

Meanwhile, Freeman just wrapped a successful summer stint in the Cape Cod League where he hit .324 (55-170) with nine doubles, two triples, 21 RBI and 21 runs scored en route to being named to the CCBL All-Star Game.

This past season with the Bucs, Freeman led the team in nearly every offensive category – average (.335), hits (80), doubles (18), triples (4), home runs (10), RBI (57), and slugging percentage (.569). On the mound, the left-handed hurler went 7-1 with a 3.04 ERA (19 ER/56.1 IP) and eight saves in 25 appearances (three starts). In Freeman’s 22 relief appearances, the Second Team All-Atlantic Sun selection went 6-0 with a 0.65 ERA (3 ER/41.1 IP) and converted on all eight of his save opportunities.
