JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (March 4, 2014) – The ETSU baseball team plays its first night game of the season Wednesday as the Blue and Gold host Eastern Kentucky at 6:05 p.m. in Thomas Stadium.

LAST TIME OUT FOR THE BUCS

ETSU (5-6) was swept by reigning Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference champion Canisius over the weekend and the Bucs look to bounce back into the win column against the Colonels.

The Bucs couldn’t get anything going offensively as the Golden Griffins outscored ETSU, 24-8, while also out-hitting the Blue and Gold, 37-15.

Freshman Zach Mize (Gainesville, Ga.) belted his first collegiate home run in Friday’s 9-2 setback, while fellow freshman Brandon Moss (Atlanta, Ga.) took advantage of his playing time on Sunday. Moss reached base in his two plate appearances and registered his first collegiate hit in the contest.

Senior right-hander Will Chesney (Knoxville, Tenn.) kept his scoreless innings streak alive as he made one appearance on the weekend and tossed one shutout inning on the mound. Chesney has now pitched 10.0 scoreless frames to start the year and has struck out 10 batters while not allowing a walk.

ABOUT EASTERN KENTUCKY

Eastern Kentucky improved to 4-6 after sweeping UNC Asheville over the weekend. The Colonels outscored the Bulldogs, 19-7, en route to earning their first wins since defeating Alabama State on opening day.

Freshman outfielder Shea Sullivan is hitting a team-high .370 (10-27) as all 10 of his hits have gone for singles. Meanwhile, sophomore outfielder Kyle Nowlin is also hitting .316 (12-38) with two doubles, one home run and five runs scored.

As a team, the Colonels have stolen 17 bases in 21 attempts, while EKU hitters have been hit 18 times and walked 36 times.

EKU was picked to finish fifth in the Ohio Valley Conference Preseason Poll, while senior catcher Sean Hagen was voted to the preseason all-conference team.

PITCHING MATCHUP

Freshman left-hander Jamin McCann (Kingsport, Tenn.) will make his first collegiate start on Wednesday, while junior righty Ben Gullo gets the starting nod for the Colonels.

McCann has made two appearances this season for the Bucs, totaling five innings of work.

Gullo has made one appearance and allowed one run on one hit in an inning of work in an 11-3 loss to Alabama State back on Feb. 16.

SERIES HISTORY

Wednesday marks the 86th all-time meeting between the two programs, with EKU leading the series 51-33-1.

The two teams last met in the 2012 opener when the Colonels took two of three from the Bucs at Thomas Stadium.

Clinton Freeman (Jonesborough, Tenn.) is hitting .455 (5-11) with one double, one triple and two RBI in three career games against EKU, while red-shirt senior right-hander Derek Bushey (Richmond, Va.) has a 1.42 ERA (1 ER/6.1 IP) against the Colonels. Bushey tossed five scoreless innings with five strikeouts in two appearances versus EKU in 2012.
