Bucs, Spartans play to advance to Atlantic Sun title game

DeLAND Fla. (May 25, 2013) – The ETSU baseball team returns to action in the Atlantic Sun Championship on Saturday afternoon when the Bucs take on USC Upstate at 1:15 p.m., from Stetson’s Melching Field.

ETSU (34-22) has won five straight and 12 of its last 16 after defeating Stetson and most recently No. 23 Mercer in the conference tournament. The Bucs opened the conference tournament with a 4-3 11-inning win over the host Hatters on Wednesday and the Bucs followed that up with a 7-4 10-inning win over the top-seeded Bears on Friday to become the first team to win multiple extra-inning games in A-Sun Championship history.

USC Upstate (28-29) suffered a 12-6 setback to Mercer on Wednesday in its tournament opener, but the Spartans have bounced back to stay alive after winning consecutive elimination games. The Spartans took down Stetson, 6-0, on Thursday and advanced to face ETSU after defeating Mercer, 10-1, late Friday night.

Should the Bucs defeat USC Upstate in the 1:15 game, the Blue and Gold will move on to play for the A-Sun Championship on Sunday afternoon; however, should the Spartans win the first game, both teams will play an elimination game Saturday night at 8:15 p.m.

The Blue and Gold took two of three from USC Upstate earlier this year in Spartanburg, while ETSU has won 11 of the 17 games over the Spartans since playing as conference foes.

Fans can watch Saturday’s game for free on ASun.TV, while “Voice of the Bucs” Jay Sandos will carry the play-by-play on WXSM-AM 640. Live stats will also be available via Stat Broadcast.
