ETSU baseball hosts free clinic for area Little Leaguers
Saturday, March 09, 2013
JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (March 9, 2013) – With a rare Saturday free from regular season game action, the ETSU baseball team took time to host a free coaches and players clinic for area Little Leagues Saturday afternoon at Thomas Stadium.
In conjunction with the Johnson City American Little League, over 250 children from across the Tri-Cities along with nearly 500 parents and coaches were on hand for the event, which featured free ETSU baseball t-shirts, ticket vouchers and hot dogs for those in attendance.
“Our team and our athletic department are dedicated to reaching out and engaging our local community,” said ETSU head coach Tony Skole. “This is our way of showing support to the coaches and players at the youth league level in this area. I was really pleased with the turnout and our players really enjoyed this opportunity to interact with so many kids who love the game of baseball.”
During the clinic, the ETSU staff held a one-hour session with the youth league coaches regarding basic instruction of baseball fundamentals.
Following the coaches clinic, the youngsters had an opportunity to listen and watch ETSU’s players demonstrate proper defensive techniques. In addition, each child was given a chance to run the bases at Thomas Stadium, while also looking on as several of ETSU’s hitters put on a show with a home run derby.
It was also announced during the event that ETSU would be hosting a special Little League weekend March 22-24 when the Buccaneers take on nationally-ranked Atlantic Sun Conference opponent Florida Gulf Coast at Thomas Stadium. During that series, Little Leaguers will receive free admission when they were their uniform to the game, which means they can attend all three games if they would like for free. There will also be other special promotions that weekend.
