ASHEVILLE, N.C. (Apr. 10, 2012) – UNC Asheville (16-18) rallied with four runs in the fifth inning to lift the Bulldogs past ETSU (15-15), 7-3, Tuesday afternoon at Greenwood Field.

Klint Davis (1-0) earned the win after pitching a scoreless inning of relief, while Ethan Steible picked up his third save of the season after recording two outs in the ninth. Zach Waters (Woodstock, Ga.) was charged with the loss after allowing four runs on six hits in two innings of relief.

Hunter Bryant led the Bulldogs at the plate by going 3-for-4, while Eli Miller and Patrick Koontz had two hits apiece. Koontz along with Cody Adkins each had two RBI.

Catcher Mason Hershey (Altoona, Pa.) led the Bucs at the plate by going 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI. Corey McPherson (Johnson City, Tenn.) was 1-for-3 and recorded his first RBI of the season. Meanwhile, Matthew Scruggs (Knoxville, Tenn.) was 1-for-4 and blasted his league-leading 12th home run of the season.

UNC Asheville took the early lead in the bottom of the first as Koontz blasted a two-out solo home run over the left field wall.

ETSU tied the game in the fourth inning after Scruggs blasted his 12th home run of the season. With one-out in the inning, Scruggs drilled the 3-2 offering from UNC Asheville starter Elliot Criss over the scoreboard in left center field to even the score at 1-1.

The Bulldogs regained the lead in the bottom half of the fourth on a sacrifice fly by Adkins. Todd Joyner led off the frame with a single through the left side and then advanced into scoring position on a wild pitch. After Joyner advanced to third on a fly out, Adkins drove him home with a sacrifice fly.

The Bucs took their first lead of the game in the fifth with two runs on two hits. Alex Reynolds (Johnson City, Tenn.) led off the inning with a walk and later advanced to second on a balk. Then, Hershey drilled an RBI double down the right field line to tie the game. McPherson followed with an RBI single up the middle to put the Bucs in front 3-2.

Once again, UNC Asheville regained the lead in the bottom half of the inning as the Bulldogs plated four runs on five hits and an ETSU error. Jordan Lurie got the rally started with a leadoff double down the right field line. After Eli Miller singled to put runners on the corners with no outs, Koontz delivered an RBI single to right field, which was misplayed allowing Miller to score from first as well. With one-out in the inning, Joyner delivered an RBI sacrifice fly to extend the UNCA lead. After Cody Buch singled to right field to put runners and first and second, Adkins delivered an RBI single through the left side to put the Bulldogs in front, 7-3.

ETSU will be back in action tomorrow as the Bucs play host to Tennessee at 7:05 p.m. inside Thomas Stadium.

Notes:

-       Clinton Freeman has now reached base in 24 consecutive games after going 1-for-3 with a walk on Tuesday.
