JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Mar. 20, 2012) – Starting pitcher Jimmy Nesselt (Plantation, Fla.) tossed three scoreless innings and the bullpen allowed just one run over six innings lifting the ETSU (11-8) baseball team to a 3-1 victory over UNC Asheville (11-10) on Tuesday night at Thomas Stadium.

Nesselt (1-2) picked up his first career collegiate win after allowing just one hit and walk over his three innings of work. Meanwhile, six other ETSU pitchers combined to allow just one run and four hits on the afternoon. UNC Asheville starter Adam Spracklin (0-1) was charged with the loss after allowing two hits, one run and one walk in 2.2 innings.

Derek Niesman (Wellington, Fla.) and Chris Riopedre (Miami, Fla.) led the Bucs at the plate with two hits each. Riopedre, who had his second multi-hit game of his career, also drove in his first career run. Clinton Freeman (Jonesborough, Tenn.) had the other RBI of the day as he finished 1-for-4.

The Bucs got on the scoreboard in the third inning with a run on one hit. Catcher Mason Hershey (Altoona, Pa.) led off the frame with a line drive single to left field and then advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Andrew Green (Powell, Tenn.). After Hershey advanced to third on a wild pitch, Matthew Scruggs (Knoxville, Tenn.) walked to put runners on the corners with just one out. Freeman followed with his 19th RBI of the season on a ground out to give the Bucs the 1-0 lead.

ETSU extended its lead in the fourth inning with two runs on three hits. Kerry Doane (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) led off the inning with a base-hit and later stole second to get into scoring position. Niesman followed with a single in which second baseman Eli Miller overthrew first base allowing Doane to score from second and Niesman to advance to second base.  After stealing third, Niesman scored on an RBI single from Riopedre to put the Bucs in front, 3-0.

UNC Asheville got on the scoreboard in the sixth on two hits. Casey Ebersole and Andrew Kirkland started the inning with back-to-back singles to put runners on the corners with no outs. Catcher Sam Turner grounded into a double play, allowing Ebersole to score from third, but the Bulldogs were unable to push across any other runs.

Doane pitched a scoreless ninth inning to earn his fourth save of the season.

Miller led the way for UNC Asheville at the plate as he finished 2-for-4 – the only Bulldog to have a multi-hit game.
