Baseball Bucs take FGCU series with 11-5 win

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (April 3, 2011) - The ETSU baseball team picked up its fourth series win Sunday as the Bucs rode the hot bat of senior Derek Trent (Kingsport, Tenn.) to a 11-5 win over Florida Gulf Coast at Cardinal Park.
 
Trent posted a season-best four hits as he led the way with two doubles, two runs and two RBI on the day for the Bucs (16-8, 8-5 A-Sun). Dylan Pratt (Johnson City, Tenn.) and Andrew Green (Powell, Tenn.) also had multiple hits in the game.
 
Senior Ben Booker (Knoxville, Tenn.) improved to 3-0 on the year after limiting the Eagles (14-15, 8-7 A-Sun) to three runs on five hits with two walks and two strikeouts in 5.1 innings, while Kevin Bryant was tabbed with the loss for FGCU after surrendering five runs (three earned) on five hits in 3.1 innings.
 
Matthew Scruggs (Knoxville, Tenn.) single-handedly gave the Bucs a 1-0 lead in the top of the first. Scruggs led off the frame with a double down the left field line and then came around to score on a throwing error by Robert Green after stealing third base.
 
The Bucs added two runs in the bottom of the third after an RBI bunt single by Green and perfect squeeze bunt by Derek Niesman (Wellington, Fla.) to go in front 3-0.
 
In the top of the third, the Eagles cut the Buccaneer lead to 3-2 after an RBI triple by Brandon Bednar and a RBI single by Tim Roberson.
 
ETSU jumped out to a 7-2 lead in the bottom of the fourth as the Bucs plated four runs on five walks, two Florida Gulf Coast errors and a wild pitch.
 
Javi Sujo cut the ETSU advantage to 7-3 in the top of the sixth as he singled in Roberson.
 
The Eagles got within a couple runs in the top of the seventh after RBI singles by Mike Reeves and Sujo to make the score 7-5 Bucs.
 
The Buccaneers added two insurance runs in both the seventh and eighth innings to go in front 11-5. Green and Niesman each drove in a run in the seventh, while Trent brought in a run on his fourth hit of the day and shortstop Kerry Doane (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) plated the final run for ETSU on sacrifice fly to right.
 
Junior Bo Reeder (Cookeville, Tenn.) closed out the contest for the Buccaneers throwing a scoreless eighth and ninth to increase his scoreless inning streak to 13.2 innings.
