Radford tops Baseball Bucs in nightcap, 9-4

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (March 22, 2011) - After taking the first game of the doubleheader against Radford, the ETSU baseball team dropped the nightcap to the Highlanders 9-4 Tuesday night at Cardinal Park.
 
The Bucs (13-5, 5-2 A-Sun) were outhit 15-9 by the Highlanders (13-7) in the contest as junior John Long (Anderson, S.C.) suffered his second loss in as many starts after giving up five runs (three earned) on five hits in 0.1 innings.
 
Michael Costello earned the win for Radford throwing 2.0 innings while giving up two runs on four hits with two strikeouts.
 
The Highlanders jumped out in front in the bottom of the first as RU scored six runs on seven hits highlighted by a two-run double by Ryan Burgess to take a 6-0 edge.
 
ETSU cut the lead to 6-2 in the top of the second on Matthew Scruggs' (Knoxville, Tenn.) fifth homer of the season as he drove a ball over the scoreboard in left for a two-run home run.
 
Radford added another run in the third inning on a RBI single by Blake Sipe to take a 7-2 advantage.
 
In the bottom of the fifth, the Highlanders increased their lead to 9-2 after a solo home run by Alex Guerra and a RBI single by Matt Hillsinger.
 
Freshman Logan Rice (Irwin, Tenn.) was great in relief for the Bucs in relief as he came into the game in the fifth and threw 1.1 scoreless innings striking out four Highlanders.
 
Paul Hoilman (Johnson City, Tenn.) hit his third home run of the year in the seventh as he sent a two-run homer over left field fence to make the final 9-4. With the home run, Hoilman passed Shane Byrne for the ETSU career runs record with 199.
 
Offensively, Hoilman and catcher Derek Trent (Kingsport, Tenn.) each had two hits in the game for the Buccaneers.
