JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Oct. 10, 2010) - A six-run first inning propelled the Gold Squad to a 14-9 win over the Blue Team in game three of the Blue/Gold World Series Sunday afternoon at Cardinal Park.

Sophomore Kerry Doane (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) picked up the win for the Gold team striking out three in 5.0 innings while allowing only three runs on six hits.

Michael Gonzalez (Jupiter, Fla.) led the game off with a solo home run to right to put the Gold squad up 1-0. The Gold team went on to score five more runs on five hits in the inning to take a 6-0 lead.

Freshman Clinton Freeman (Jonesborough, Tenn.) continued to swing a hot bat for the Blue Team as he homered in the bottom of the first to cut the Gold lead to 6-1

In the bottom of the second, outfielder Dylan Pratt (Johnson City, Tenn.) drove a solo home run over the fence in left to make the score 6-2.

The Gold team got a run back in the top of the third when freshman Corey McPherson (Johnson City, Tenn.) brought in Zach Waters (Woodstock, Ga.)  on a sac bunt to first.

Derek Niesman (Wellington, Fla.) cut into the Gold lead in the bottom of the third as he singled in Andrew Green (Powell, Tenn.) from second to make the score 7-3.

First baseman Paul Hoilman (Johnson City, Tenn.) put the Gold Squad up 8-3 in the fourth as he brought in Doane on a double to left. In the next at bat, catcher Derek Trent (Kingsport, Tenn.) singled to left scoring Hoilman from second to increase the lead to 9-3.

Juniors Bo Reeder (Cookeville, Tenn.) and Pratt hit back-to-back home runs in the bottom of the seventh to pull the Blue Team within four runs, 9-5, but the Gold Squad quickly got back out to a big lead in the top of the eighth as they scored five runs on four hits highlighted by a Trent two-run double to make the score 14-5.

The Blue team rallied for four runs in the ninth after an RBI single by Alex Reynolds (Johnson City, Tenn.) and a three-run home run by Will Chesney (Knoxville, Tenn.), but it would not be enough as the Gold would hold on to win 14-9.
