Bucs explode for four home runs to defeat Stetson 12-7

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (April 30, 2010) - A four-home run night lifted the ETSU baseball team over Stetson 12-7 Friday night at Cardinal Park in the first game of a three-game series.

 

Junior Bo Burton (Kingsport, Tenn.) picked up his second straight win for the Bucs (24-18, 12-7 A-Sun) throwing 2.2 scoreless innings to close out the game.

 

Stetson starter Jacob deGrom was tabbed with the loss for the Hatters (24-20, 11-5 A-Sun) surrendering eight runs (six earned) on 13 hits in 6.1 innings of work.

 

Freshman Kerry Doane (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) and third baseman Bo Reeder (Cookeville, Tenn.) led the way for the ETSU offense. Doane was 3-for-5 with two home runs, scored twice and drove in four, while Reeder was 2-for-4 with a home run, scored three runs and had four RBI.

 

First baseman Paul Hoilman (Johnson City, Tenn.) also had three hits in the game as the Bucs out hit Stetson 16-14 in the contest.

 

The Hatters grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first as Mark Jones drew a bases loaded walk scoring Sean Emory.

 

Doane evened the game at 2-all in the second as he drove a two-run home run over the right field fence.

 

The Bucs went in front 3-2 in the third as Matthew Scruggs (Knoxville, Tenn.) came in to score from third on a throwing error by Stetson catcher Nick Rickles.

 

Stetson regained the lead in the fifth as Ryan Lashley drove a two-run home run over the scoreboard in left to make the score 4-3 Hatters.

 

ETSU exploded for four runs on five hits in the bottom half of the fifth to take a 7-4 lead. After an Andrew Green (Powell, Tenn.) single and Hoilman double, catcher Derek Trent (Kingsport, Tenn.) singled through the left side scoring Green. Later in the inning Doane crushed his second two-run home run of the game over the fence in left center.

 

In the top of the sixth, the Hatters cut the Buccaneer lead to 7-5 as Rickles came in to score on an Emory single.

 

SU tied the game at 7-7 in the seventh after RBI singles by Spencer Theisen and Jones.

 

The Bucs answered in the bottom of the seventh as left fielder Michael Gonzalez (Jupiter, Fla.) brought in Reeder on a sac fly to left to give ETSU a 8-7 lead.

 

ETSU grabbed four insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth to take a 12-7 lead as Garrett May (Marietta, Ga.) drove a solo home run over the left field fence to lead off the inning. Later in the inning, Reeder crushed a three-run home run over the left field fence for his 13th home run of the season.
