Hoilman's record night powers Bucs to 12-4 win over Wofford

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (May 5, 2010) - A two-home run night by junior Paul Hoilman (Johnson City, Tenn.) powered the ETSU baseball team to its fifth straight win as the Bucs defeated Wofford 12-4 Wednesday night at Cardinal Park.

Hoilman and freshman Kerry Doane (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) led the Bucs (27-18, 14-7 A-Sun) offensively as Hoilman was 2-for-4 with four RBI and scored three runs, while Doane had a team-best three hits with two doubles and drove in a pair. Hoilman's home run in the sixth moved the local native past Nathan Copeland for the single season total bases record with 162 on the year.

 

Freshman Derek Bushey (Richmond, Va.) picked up his first win of the season throwing three scoreless innings while limiting the Terriers to one hit.

 

J.D. Osborne was tabbed with the loss for Wofford (14-30, 7-14 SoCon) surrendering 11 runs (ten earned) on 13 hits in 6.0 innings of work.

 

The Bucs scored four runs on four hits in the first inning highlighted by a two-run double by Doane to take a 4-0 lead.

 

ETSU added another run in the second inning as Derek Niesman (Wellington, Fla.) came around to score on a Terrier throwing error to make the score 5-0 Buccaneers.

 

In the third inning, Doane came around to score from second on a Chas Byrne (Johnson City, Tenn.) single through the right side to extend the ETSU lead to 6-0.

 

The Terriers cut the lead to 6-3 in the fourth as WU scored three runs on a two-run double by Mac Doyle and a sac fly to left Landon Bennett.

 

First baseman Paul Hoilman (Johnson City, Tenn.) crushed his 18th home run of the season in the bottom half of the fourth as he drove a solo shot over the fence in right center to put the Bucs ahead, 7-3.

 

After a Doane double in the fifth, designated hitter Michael Gonzalez (Jupiter, Fla.) roped a double to left scoring Doane to give ETSU a 8-3 lead.

 

Bennett drove in Doyle on a sacrifice fly to center in the sixth to make the score 8-4.

 

Hoilman struck again in the sixth as he crushed a three-run home run over the scoreboard in left to extend the Buccaneer lead to 11-4.

 

Niesman brought in Gonzalez in the seventh on a ball hit to short to make the final 12-4.
