CHARLESTON, S.C. (Feb. 19, 2010) - A three-run third for The Citadel turned out to be the difference as the ETSU baseball team dropped its season opener Friday to the Bulldogs at Joseph P. Riley Jr. Park in Charleston, S.C., 4-1.

The Bucs (0-1) got a good outing from junior Chas Byrne (Johnson City, Tenn.) who went 6.0 innings giving up four runs (three earned) on six hits with four strikeouts and only one walk.

Asher Wojciechowski picked up the win for the Bulldogs (1-0) going 7.0 innings allowing one run on three hits with nine strikeouts.

"Today was a tough match up for us," said head coach Tony Skole. "I thought we did some things real well, and obviously there are some things we need to improve on. Chas Byrne and Scott McNally were both very good today. I thought Chas gave us a great start. He is only going to get better and better as the season progresses, while Scott was very good in his first college outing."

Sophomore Bo Reeder (Cookeville, Tenn.) got the Bucs on the board in the top of the third as he singled up the middle scoring Michael Gonzalez (Jupiter, Fla.) to go ahead 1-0.

The Citadel jumped in front 2-1 in the bottom of the third as two runs came in to score on a Matt Simonelli single and a Buccaneer throwing error. The Bulldogs added another run in the inning on a Bryan Altman double to take a 3-1 advantage.

In the bottom of the sixth, the Bulldogs extended their lead to 4-1 on an Altman sacrifice fly to right.

Freshman Scott McNally (Marietta, Ga.) came in, in the seventh and threw two scoreless innings in relief for the Bucs.

ETSU looked to have a rally going in the top of the ninth after getting two on, but The Citadel closer Drew Mahaffey got a strikeout and a fly out to end the game.

"We had some non-competitive at bats today, and I am hopeful that as we see more live pitching that will change," Skole said. "Defensively we have to make routine plays under pressure in order to win. I am hopeful we will be a little better defensively tomorrow."

The Bucs are back in action tomorrow at 11 a.m. as they take on Kansas State on day two of The Citadel Memorial Challenge. Please visit www.ETSUBucs.com for more information on ETSU baseball and all other Buccaneer athletic news.
