Bucs sweep doubleheader against Saint Peter's

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Feb. 27, 2010) - The ETSU baseball team picked up two games Saturday against Saint Peter's College winning the first game of a doubleheader  17-3, and then came back to win 7-6 against the Peacocks in game two at Cardinal Park.

 

Sophomore Bo Reeder (Cookeville, Tenn.) pitched well for the Bucs (5-1) in the first game earning the win after throwing five scoreless innings, while freshman Scott McNally (Marietta, Ga.) continued to be brilliant on the mound for ETSU picking up his third win of the year in game two. McNally went 3.0 scoreless innings in relief with three strikeouts.

 

Dom Macaluso was tabbed with the loss for Saint Peter's (0-5) in game one, while Jeremy Ives was handed the loss in game two.

 

Offensively ETSU pounded out 30 hits on the day as the Bucs were led by centerfielder Matthew Scruggs (Knoxville, Tenn.) and Reeder. Scruggs was 5-for-9 on the day with two doubles, scored three runs and drove in three, while Reeder was also 5-for-9 and had two doubles, a triple, a home run, scored four runs and drove in five.

 

Chas Byrne (Johnson City, Tenn.) and Alex Reynolds (Johnson City, Tenn.) also had good days at the plate as Byrne was 4-for-7 with two doubles, two walks and drove in three. Reynolds came up big for ETSU going 2-for-2 in two pitch hit appearances including the game winning walk-off hit in the second game.

 

With the two wins the Bucs extend their win streak to five games, five short of the school record ten straight wins set last season.

 

In the first game, the Buccaneers exploded for five runs in the bottom of the first highlighted by a two-run single by first baseman Paul Hoilman (Johnson City, Tenn.) to make the score 5-0 ETSU.

 

ETSU extended the lead to 10-0 in the bottom of the second on a solo home run by Reeder and RBI singles by Kerry Doane (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) Derek Niesman (Wellington, Fla.), Byrne and Scruggs.

 

Shortstop Jamie Crawford (Kingsport, Tenn.) added another run for ETSU in the bottom of the fourth as he singled up the middle scoring Byrne from second to give the Bucs a 11-0 lead.

 

The Bucs extended their lead to 12-0 in the bottom of the fifth on a RBI double by Byrne to right center.

 

Brian Schroeder got the Peacocks on the board in the top of the sixth as he drove a two-run home run over the fence in right to make the score 12-2 Bucs.

 

ETSU tacked on five more runs in the bottom of the six on four hits including a two-run single by Reeder and a RBI double by Reynolds to put the Buccaneers up 17-2.

 

Saint Peter's got a run in the top of the seventh on a sacrifice fly by Chris Christopoulos to make the final 17-3.

 

In the second game, the Peacocks jumped out to 1-0 lead in the top of the first on a solo home run by Conor Mullee.

 

Saint Peter's added two more runs in the top of the fourth on two ETSU errors to take a 3-0 lead.

 

In the top of the fifth, the Peacocks extended their lead to 4-0 on a RBI single by Tom Bouck.

 

Brian Koster brought home another run for Saint Peter's in the top of the sixth on a sac fly to left. The Peacocks then scratched across another run later in the inning on a Mullee RBI single to make the score 6-0 Saint Peter's.

 

The Bucs rallied in the bottom of the sixth scoring five runs on a two-run single by Scruggs, and a two-run triple by Reeder to cut the Peacocks lead to 6-5.

 

Doane tied the game for ETSU at 6- all in the bottom of the ninth on a single to left that scored Hoilman from second. With the bases loaded, Reynolds ended the game on a walk-off single down the left field line to make the final 7-6.
